Kukis Protest Against Meiteis' Plan To Visit "Sacred" Hill For Pilgrimage

Members of the Kuki tribes gathered at Thangjing Hill in Manipur's Churachandpur and held a protest on Sunday to prevent Meiteis from undertaking their annual pilgrimage to the "sacred site", officials said. The protesters reached the hill in many vehicles to hold a sit-in, they said.

On Saturday, Kuki organisations "warned" the Meitei community against climbing Thangjing Hill, saying any such attempt "will be opposed tooth and nail".

The Meitei Heritage Society in a statement said the "Indian State must decide if the rule of law should prevail and whether the constitutional rights of its citizens should be safeguarded".

Threatening Meiteis to skip the pilgrimage to Thangjing Hill is "unconstitutional and blatant violation of freedom of free movement and right to religious practices", it said.

Thangjing Hill is considered a sacred site for the Meiteis, who visit it in April.

"There is speculation that the Meitei community intends to cross the buffer zone for Chinga Kaba at Thangting Hill in the month of April. No political settlement has been reached between the Government of India and the Kuki-Zo community, and without such an agreement, the Meitei community has no jurisdiction to enter Kuki-Zo land," six Kuki-Zo groups said in a statement.

READMeitei Body Condemns Threat To Stop Pilgrimage To "Sacred Hill", Kuki Groups Say Can't Cross "Buffer Zone"

"Whoever attempts to cross the buffer zone shall be considered a direct challenge to the Kuki-Zo community, and any untoward incidents that occur during such attempts shall be solely the responsibility of those who undertake them," it added.

The sensitive area, heavily guarded by the security forces, separates the Meitei-controlled valley areas and the Kuki-dominated hill districts.

Security has been heightened at many places in Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts, including Moirang and Phougakchai Ikhai, as a precautionary measure, officials said.

Several Cops Injured During Anti-Waqf Protest Rally In Tripura

Several policemen sustained injuries during a clash between the security personnel and the agitators who held a protest rally against the recently enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act in northern Tripura's Kailashahar under Unakoti district on Saturday afternoon.

The protest, organized by the Kailashahar Joint Action Committee, began from Tilabazar and proceeded towards Kubjhar area as they did not get police permission and decided to organise it outside the municipal area.

However, upon reaching Kubjhar, the situation escalated allegedly after a shoe was thrown towards the rally, which then took an ugly turn and a clash with police personnel followed. Bricks, stones, and glass bottles were thrown at cops.

This left Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Jayanta Karmakar, Police Inspector Jatindra Das, and several other officers injured.

The situation turned chaotic, forcing the police to resort to a mild lathi charge to disperse the crowd. Protesters then fled the scene.

Police forces, including Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel and central paramilitary units, deployed in large numbers at the site included Kailashahar Police Station officer-in-charge Sukanta Sen Chowdhury, Irani Police Station OC Arundaya Das, and DSP Utpalendu Debnath.

Following the violence, the injured security personnel were rushed to a local hospital for treatment.

In the aftermath, Unakoti District Superintendent of Police Sudhambika R and Northern Range DIG Rati Ranjan Debnath visited the area to assess the situation.

While the DIG later confirmed that the situation was under control, but some argument was seen between SP Sudhambika R and opposition Congress leader Md Badruzzaman who led the protest.

While DIG Rati Ranjan Debnath assured that peace had been restored in the area, protest leader Md Badruzzaman claimed that many protesters were injured due to police action and blamed the authorities for provoking the violence.

The incident has triggered fear and unrest across the Kailashahar subdivision, with police maintaining heightened vigil to prevent further disturbances.

President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, on April 5, as announced by the Law Ministry in a notification on the same day.

The Bill was recently passed by parliament after intense and lengthy debates in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

The law seeks to improve governance by enhancing transparency in property management, streamlining coordination between Waqf boards and local authorities and protecting stakeholders' rights.

Tracks Blocked As Violence Breaks Out In Parts Of Bengal Over Waqf Act

There was tension in at least two pockets of West Bengal on Friday afternoon following protests by members of a community against the Waqf Amendment Act.

Tension prevailed at Nimtita and Suti in minority-dominated Murshidabad district on Friday, following clashes between the protesters and the security personnel. At Nimtita railway station, protesters blocked railway tracks for hours and vandalised railway properties.

Railway Police Force personnel later had to resort to lathicharge to bring the situation under control. The protesters had also thrown stones at the security personnel, some of whom were injured.

Later, Border Security Force personnel were deployed in the area and, as per the latest available information, the situation is largely under control.

Clashes also broke out between protesters and the state police personnel at the Sajur Crossing area under Suti police station in Murshidabad district on Friday, as the protesters reportedly threw stones and crude bombs towards police personnel.

A number of police personnel and some pedestrians were also injured. The police then lathicharged the mob.

Additional police forces had been deployed in the area to keep the situation under control. However, tension prevailed in the area till the time of filing of this report.

Similar tension broke out at Amtala area in the South 24 Parganas district as people protesting against the Waqf Act attacked local police personnel there. The police retaliated, and traffic was impacted on National Highway 117 for quite some time.

The situation was similar at Champdani in Hooghly district of West Bengal.

Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari claimed that the state had been witnessing large-scale violence, anarchy and lawlessness in the name of protests by a certain group of radicals.

“These people, who have clearly stated that they are against the Constitution of India and would oppose the law of the land, have taken over the streets. Public and private properties are being vandalised at will. Public safety has been compromised as general people are at the mercy of these ruthless mobs of radicals,” he said.

The office of Governor CV Ananda Bose contacted the office of Chief Secretary Manoj Pant and conveyed a message from the Governor that the police should adopt prompt and strict measures to keep the situation under control.

Later, the Governor issued a video message claiming that he had been receiving disturbing reports about some people taking law and order into their hands in some parts of Bengal. He also informed that, on receipt of information about certain troubles likely to brew in certain parts of West Bengal, he had a confidential discussion with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

“Even today, when some of the disturbances broke out, discussions were held with the government authorities. The Chief Secretary has assured that the government is taking very stern action against the miscreants and will not allow disturbances to escalate. The state is prepared. All action will be taken against miscreants. Nobody will be allowed to take the law into their own hands,” the Governor added.

Curfew In Parts Of Manipur's Churachandpur Amid Zomi, Hmar Tension

Curfew has been imposed in parts of Manipur's Churachandpur district due to tension over hoisting community flags in a "disputed area" between two villages inhabited by different tribes, a notification said.

Tension erupted between Zomi and Hmar tribes on Tuesday after community flags were raised in the "disputed area" between V Munhoih and Rengkai villages in Churachandpur sub-division.

Churachandpur district magistrate Dharun Kumar imposed curfew in the two villages and in the entire Kangvai, Samulamlan, and Sangaikot sub-divisions in the district.

The curfew will be eased in the remaining areas of Churachandpur from 6 am to 5 pm till April 17 to allow people access to essential items and services, the notification said.

Subsequent relaxation will be reviewed and notified based on an assessment of the law and order situation, the notification said.

Village authorities of Rengkai and V Munhoih held a meeting in the presence of the Churachandpur deputy commissioner and superintendent of police, and asked people to maintain peace and not spread rumours on social media.

India's Domestic Demand Big Magnet Amid US Trade Tariffs: Nirmala Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Tuesday that the resilience of the economy and strength of domestic demand will continue to make India an engine of growth amid the rapidly evolving global trade landscape as a result of US tariffs.

In an interaction entitled the ‘Opportunities and challenges for India's quest to become a developed economy by 2047' at the High Commission of India in London, she asserted that the economy was well placed to capitalise on domestic efficiencies and competitiveness as it tackles global headwinds.

“The world has seen depressed growth for over several years; earlier, it was low interest for long and now it's going to be low growth for long, and that's not happy news for anybody,” said Ms Sitharaman, who is in London on her first UK visit in her current Union Cabinet term.

“India has maintained its fastest growing economy tag continuously now for five years and we still think that momentum may moderate a bit, but it will still be India who will keep that growth… as our growth gets calibrated because of the consumption which exists domestically. It is backed by demand for global-standard goods and that is why globalisation since the 1990s has given India many opportunities,” she said.

“The US is the leading trade partner for India. So, at a time when trade is going to be influenced by tariffs, measures which the US government is taking, we still will have to make sure that the strength that India has in domestic demand as a big magnet which can attract global supplies must be sustained and boosted,” she noted.

The minister said the strength of this demand would prove attractive for foreign direct investment (FDI) and international manufacturing to supply for the domestic market and also export from India.

“We think India, and a few emerging markets, are going to be the engines of growth. The global depressed growth, if it has to pick up, will have to be because of these engines,” she said.

Market Crash Matter Of Concern, India Should Negotiate With US: Shashi Tharoor

Expressing concern over Monday's stock market crash following the US government's decision to impose reciprocal tariff on Indian imports, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor urged the Centre to start negotiations with that nation on bilateral trade.

Amid fears of a global trade war after US President Donald Trump's decision to impose reciprocal tariff on Indian imports, the Sensex crashed over 2,200 points during the day.

Mr Tharoor, while talking to reporters at the Ahmedabad Airport, said the Indian economy will survive and won't go into recession because of its 5.4 per cent growth.

The Thiruvananthapuram MP is here to take part in the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Tuesday and the All India Congress Committee (AICC) session on April 9.

"It (today's market crash) is indeed a matter of great concern. We hope India might get some relief (in tariff) during our future negotiations with the US. But, as of now, this is certainly negative news. Global markets, not just Indian, are severely affected. It seems no one understood Trump's logic behind tariffs because the US stock market has also crashed badly," said the Congress leader.

When asked if such a situation would lead to recession, Mr Tharoor said, "Some countries may go into recession but we are better off because we have 5.4 per cent growth. Therefore it (economy) may come down but it will not go into recession." He said Trump's decision to impose higher tariffs on other countries exporting similar goods to the US can benefit India but "at this stage it is impossible to tell".

"We have to ensure we can quickly start negotiations on bilateral trade agreements, which might reduce the effect of this on our economy and exports. But it depends on how successful those negotiations are," said the former diplomat.

"No one could have foreseen such bad news in two-three days. It was on April 2 when tariffs were announced, today is the 7th. The world has suffered so much during these five days. God knows what lies ahead. All we can do is tighten our belts and see how best we can cope with this," he said.

All accused are presently lodged at the Bengaluru Central Jail.

The court, which rejected the bail petition of Tarun Raju, will take up the bail petition of Jain on April 9.

Ranya Rao, the stepdaughter of senior police officer Ramchandra Rao, was arrested on March 3 for allegedly smuggling 14.2 kilograms of gold, valued at over Rs 12.56 crore.

The case is presently being investigated by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), the Enforcement Directorate (ED), and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The state government has set up a special team led by a senior IAS officer to look into the role of DGP Ramachandra Rao. The report in this regard has been submitted to the government, sources stated.

The investigation into the gold smuggling case involving Ranya Rao by the DRI has revealed that the actress has been involved in hawala transactions in collusion with Jain, the third accused in the case.

The DRI, in its remand application submitted to the Special Court for Economic Offences in connection with the arrest of Jain in the gold smuggling case, alleged that the jeweller and Ranya Rao were involved in a hawala nexus.

The investigations have found that with the help of Jain, Ranya Rao disposed of 49.6 kg of gold and transferred Rs 38.4 crore of hawala money to Dubai.

The DRI stated: "The investigations have indicated that Jain, hailing from Ballari and settled in Bengaluru, assisted and abetted Ranya Rao in disposing of 49.6 kilograms of gold worth around Rs 40 crore and transferring hawala money of Rs 38.4 crore to Dubai."

Meerut Murder Accused Found Pregnant During Health Check-Up: Official

Muskan Rastogi, who along with her lover is accused of killing her husband and is lodged in a jail here, was found to be pregnant during a preliminary test, officials said on Monday.

Senior Jail Superintendent Viresh Raj Sharma said that health check-up and pregnancy test are done regularly for every female inmate coming to the jail and Muskan's test was also a part of this process.

He said that he has not received the report of the doctors yet and has just received verbal information that Muskan is pregnant.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Ashok Kataria said that Muskan was given a preliminary test, which confirmed her pregnancy.

He said that the next step would be an ultrasound test, which will clarify the condition and duration of the pregnancy.

Saurabh Rajput, a former Merchant Navy officer, was killed on the night of March 4 at his house in Indiranagar in Meerut district. His wife, Muskan, and her lover, Sahil, are accused of drugging him and stabbing him to death.

It is alleged they dismembered his body, severing his head and hands, and hid them in a blue drum filled with cement.

The investigation into the sensational case has revealed that Muskan had allegedly been planning the murder since November 2023.

Both the accused are currently in judicial custody. Muskan is engaged in sewing work in the jail, while Sahil is involved in agricultural work. Both have also been included in the rehabilitation process with the help of a drug de-addiction centre.

Tahawwur Rana's Last Plea Against Extradition To India Rejected By US Court

The US Supreme Court has denied 26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana's last application seeking a stay on his extradition to India, moving him closer to being handed over to Indian authorities to face justice.

The three-day attacks on hotels, a train station and a Jewish center in Mumbai in which 166 people were killed began on November 26, 2008. India says Pakistan-based Islamist group Lashkar-e-Taiba orchestrated the attacks. Pakistan's government denies being involved.

Tahawwur Rana, a Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin who was based in Chicago, was convicted in 2011 and later sentenced to 13 years in prison. He is currently lodged in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles.

The 64-year-old is known to be associated with Pakistani-American terrorist David Coleman Headley, one of the main conspirators of the 26/11 attacks. Headley conducted a recce of Mumbai before the attacks by posing as an employee of Rana's immigration consultancy.

He was convicted in the US of one count of conspiracy to provide material support to the terrorist plot in Denmark and one count of providing material support to Pakistan-based terrorist organisation Lashker-e-Taiba which was responsible for the attacks in Mumbai.

Rana had submitted an "Emergency Application For Stay Pending Litigation of Petition For Writ of Habeas Corpus" on February 27, with Elena Kagan, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the US and Circuit Justice for the Ninth Circuit.

Earlier last month, the judge had denied the application.

Rana had then renewed his "Emergency Application for Stay Pending Litigation of Petition for Writ of Habeas Corpus previously addressed to Justice Kagan," and requested that the renewed application be directed to Chief Justice Roberts.

Today, a notice on the Supreme Court website said, "Application denied by the Court."

During a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the White House in February this year, President Donald Trump announced that his administration has approved the extradition of "very evil" Rana, wanted by Indian law enforcement agencies for his role in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, "to face justice in India".

"I am pleased to announce that my administration has approved the extradition of one of the plotters and one of the very evil people of the world, having to do with the horrific 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack to face justice in India. So he is going to be going back to India to face justice," Trump had said.

Walk On Knees, Lick Coins: Firm's Punishment For Underperforming Employees

A private marketing firm here has been accused of subjecting its underperforming employees to degrading treatment, including making them walk on their knees like chained dogs and lick coins from the floor.

The state Labour department has ordered a probe into the alleged inhuman workplace harassment after the disturbing visuals were aired by local television channels.

As the issue came to the light, state Labour Minister V Sivankutty ordered an inquiry into the undated incident and instructed the district labour officer to submit an immediate report on the incident.

The visuals purportedly showed a person using a leash to force a man to crawl on his knees on the floor, resembling a dog.

Later, some employees told a TV channel that those who fail to achieve targets were subjected to such punishments by the management of the firm.

According to police, the incident allegedly took place in connection with a private marketing firm functioning in Kaloor and the crime allegedly occurred at nearby Perumbavoor.

The police told reporters that they haven't received any complaint and the owner denied the allegations.

Quoting the owner of the firm, they said the alleged harassment might have taken place in a firm in Perumbavoor which used to market and sell the products of the establishment in Kaloor.

"No case has been registered so far and an investigation is underway," an officer said.

Labour Minister Sivankutty termed the visuals "shocking and disturbing" and said it cannot be accepted at any cost in a state like Kerala.

"I have ordered a probe into the incident and instructed the district Labour officer to submit a report in connection with the incident after carrying out a probe," he told the media.

Later in the day, the State Human Rights Commission registerd a case into the incident based on a complaint filed by High Court lawyer Kulathoor Jaisingh.

Meanwhile, the Kerala State Youth Commission also intervened and registerd a case on its own into the alleged harassment incident.

The panel directed the District Police Chief to submit a report in this regard.

In a statement, Commission Chairman M Shajar said legal action should be taken against such practices that are unacceptable in a civilised and democratic society.

"As a civilised society, we should collectively respond against such anti-social trends," he said.

Bengal's 'Nolen Gurer Sandesh', 6 Other Items Get GI Tag

West Bengal has earned Geographical Indication (GI) tags for seven state products, including the iconic 'Nolen Gurer Sandesh' and Baruipur guavas, a development expected to boost the local economy and lend global recognition to the state's traditional offerings, an official said on Friday.

'Nolen Gurer Sandesh', a winter delicacy made from fresh 'chhena' (curdled milk) and the season's prized 'nolen gur' (date palm jaggery) holds a cherished place in Bengali households. The jaggery imparts a rich, caramel-like flavour and warm golden hue to the 'sandesh' (a type of sweetmeat).

"This jaggery is the soul of the sandesh made in winter. Without it, the winter sandesh wouldn't be the same," said a sweet-maker from South Kolkata.

The same jaggery is also used in 'Joynagar Moya', another traditional sweet meat that gained the GI tag a few years ago.

The other five items to receive the GI tag Kamarpukur's white 'bonde', Murshidabad's 'Chhanabora', Bishnupur's 'motichur laddoo', Radhunipagal rice, and Malda's Nistari silk yarn, "The announcement of the GI tag for seven new products is a huge step forward," said HK Guha, president of the Federation of Association of Cottage and Small Industries.

The federation works closely with MSMEs and state bodies to promote West Bengal's traditional products for GI recognition.

"It's encouraging, but there are many more regional treasures still waiting. I am personally involved in six applications that are still pending," Mr Guha added.

The state has, so far, secured GI tags for 26 other products, spanning handicrafts, textiles, tea, food items and art forms.

Various institutions have taken the initiative to apply for the latest round of GI tags.

Misti Udyog, a leading body of Bengali confectioners, submitted the application for the sweetmeat items, while Baruipur Farmers Producer Company applied for guavas, and the State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute at Narendrapur applied for Radhunipagal rice.

"These applications were filed two to three years ago. Their approval now is a reward for years of work," said a representative of the farmers' company.

Across India, more than 500 products have received GI recognition. West Bengal is now pushing for GI tags for other sweetmeat items such as Shaktigarh's 'langcha', Krishnanager's 'swar puria', Ranaghat's 'pantua', besides the traditional silver craft of Mograhat.

"These products deserve the same recognition. They are not just commodities, they are part of our cultural identity," Mr Guha said.

However, confectioners continue to face hurdles in marketing jaggery-based sweets like 'Nolen Gurer Sandesh', particularly due to their short shelf life.

"Despite research, the shelf life is still limited to 7-10 days. It makes exporting these sweets quite expensive due to air freight," said a Joynagar Moya exporter.

However, the date palm jaggery itself is now sold in modern packaging and enjoys a longer shelf life, offering some hope for future scalability.

With the GI recognition, these products of West Bengal are poised to enter new markets, reinforcing the cultural pride and livelihoods of artisans and farmers across the state.

According to a senior official of the state science, technology and biotechnology department, programmes are held to raise awareness among people in the districts in this regard.

Top Court Stays Order To Demolish Illegal Constructions In Gurugram's DLF

In a relief to 2,100 DLF residents, the Supreme Court on Friday temporarily stayed the Punjab and Haryana High Court order that had previously ordered the demolition of unauthorised constructions in housing units and the sealing of commercial activities in DLF Phases 1 to 5.

The top court has initially provided relief for 4 weeks to residents, who had moved it for relief.

The relief came on a day when the Department of Town and Country Planning (DTCP) was set to launch its drive on illegal structures to execute the Punjab and Haryana High Court directive.

"We came to know that the matter was taken up by the Supreme Court today. We went to the spot to execute the High Court order, but later we came to know that the top court had stayed it. However, we have yet to go through the Supreme Court order," TCP, Enforcement, Amit Madholia said.

On the other hand, the residents welcomed the SC's decision.

"We welcomed the Supreme Court's decision. We are the victims in this case. This is not government land. We have possession of our own land and pay all necessary taxes to the departments concerned. We presented our plea before the court, which it considered," Satish Yadav, a resident, said.

The High Court had ordered sealing action on the petition of DLF Phase 3 Resident Welfare Association (RWA) President Sameer Puri.

On the Supreme Court's decision, Puri said: "The High Court had given the decision in our favor. Now there is a stay in the Supreme Court. We will also take this issue forward in the Supreme Court. We will present our side."

The HC had issued its directive on February 13, following which an enforcement team survey identified over 4,200 properties violating building regulations.

The orders from the court created panic, particularly in the economically weaker section (EWS) blocks of DLF 3's U-Block and among builders and the residents of these areas. While 4,200 properties had been identified by the DTCP for violations earlier, 2,100 units faced a demolition and sealing drive that was set to begin on April 4, on the Punjab and Haryana High Court's orders. Before this, the property owners were served show-cause notices and given seven days to respond. Those who failed to provide a satisfactory explanation were set to face strict action in an operation conducted under the Haryana Urban Development Act and Haryana Building Code regulations.

The department's enforcement team had finalized the action plan to target illegal constructions and unauthorized commercial activities. To ensure smooth execution, four teams were formed, and duty magistrates had been appointed for supervision. Additionally, a heavy police force was also deployed to prevent any untoward incidents during the operation.

For several years, commercial activities have flourished in these 60-square-yard houses, with many homeowners renting out spaces for shops, paying guest (PG) accommodations, and guest houses. The violations in U-Block are among the most severe, with some buildings illegally extended up to six or eight floors, far beyond permissible limits. However, following the HC directive and the upcoming crackdown, these businesses have shut down.

The authorities had even warned that any tampering with the sealing process would lead to legal action, including FIRs.

DLF City Resident Welfare Association (RWA) had filed a public interest litigation in the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2021 regarding illegal constructions in various areas of DLF Phases one to five. The petitioners had said that the illegal constructions have lowered the quality of life in the city and urged the court to order the demolition of such buildings. The petitioners also requested the court to cancel the illegally issued occupation certificates.

'Fabricated Video, Lookalike': Woman Techie's Note Before Suicide

A 28-year-old woman software engineer allegedly took her own life in Nagpur after leaving behind a purported suicide note, claiming she was the victim of a conspiracy involving a fake video and threats to her life, police said on Thursday.

The engineer, who worked for a company in Pune, had returned to her hometown Nagpur, where she lived with her father, brother, and sister-in-law, around 15 days ago.

On Tuesday morning, when only her father was at home located in Mankapur locality, she asked him to step out to buy breakfast and later hanged herself, according to the police.

After police was called to her residence, they recovered an identical suicide note written in English and Marathi, in which she accused two individuals named Ritesh and Pratim of being responsible for her death, they said.

She also alleged that her roommate had issued threats to kill her. Additionally, she mentioned that her mobile phone was stolen from the Indore airport on March 5. Despite her attempts to lodge a complaint, the police allegedly refused to register it, citing the lack of a mobile bill, they said.

In the note, the techie also claimed she was being framed through a fabricated video featuring a lookalike. She denied making any religious comments, suggesting certain individuals were trying to falsely implicate her, informed the police.

Her family members revealed she had travelled to Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu) from Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh) before returning home. Since then, they had observed a change in her behaviour. She appeared to be under immense mental stress, refused to eat food prepared by others, and preferred cooking her own meals or staying hungry, said the police, quoting her family members.

A case of accidental death has been registered and an investigation was underway, they added.

Satellite Spectrum To Be Assigned Administratively: Jyotiraditya Scindia

Communications Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia on Thursday in Parliament made it clear that satellite spectrum would be allocated administratively rather than through auction, aligning with global practices.

"We cannot auction an asset which is not fully in our control. This applies not only to India but all countries on earth," Jyotiraditya Scindia said, explaining the technical differences between mobile and satellite communications.

During the Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha, the minister elucidated that mobile technology operates on low-frequency waves that dissipate in the atmosphere, necessitating spectrum auctions to prevent signal interference. In contrast, satellite communications use higher frequencies transmitted directly like a laser through fixed antennas.

"Today, there is no country that auctions satellite spectrum across the world. The USA's Orbit Act prohibits the auction of satellite spectrum. In Europe, France, Germany - all countries assign satellite spectrum administratively. India is only following the global norm, " he stated.

Jyotiraditya Scindia added that the pricing of the spectrum would be determined by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), to whom the government has given a reference.

"Once TRAI defines that price, spectrum will be allocated to all providers without discrimination," he said.

The International Telecommunication Union assigns satellite orbits and frequencies, with individual countries only controlling usage within their territories, the minister pointed out.

The minister was replying to a query asked by Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala.

Lalu Prasad Yadav Admitted To AIIMS-Delhi For Treatment

RJD president and former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad was on Wednesday admitted to AIIMS in Delhi for treatment, sources said.

The 76-year-old leader has been admitted to the Cardio Critical Care Unit of the Cardio-Neuro Centre under Dr Rakesh Yadav, Professor of Cardiology at AIIMS, they said.

A team of doctors is monitoring his condition, the sources said.

He was brought to AIIMS for treatment at around 9.35 pm after being admitted to a hospital in Patna for a brief period.

Talking to reporters in Patna, his son and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said Prasad had developed sores on his back and an arm, which he hopes to get operated upon in Delhi.

"Lalu ji had reached the airport in the afternoon to board his flight for Delhi. My mother Rabri Devi is accompanying him. A sudden drop in blood pressure was noted following which we rushed him to the Paras Hospital," the former deputy chief minister said.

According to Prakash Sinha, who led the team of doctors treating Prasad, "He was kept in the emergency ward where his condition improved after intravenous therapy. He wanted to know if he could go to Delhi in an air ambulance. We asked him to go ahead." Yadav, who is the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, said, "My father is a man of courage. He chose to travel by a normal flight".

The young leader, however, admitted that the family was concerned about the ailing septuagenarian, who has been a diabetic for many years and has also undergone heart surgery and a kidney transplant.

Prasad was convicted in fodder scam cases and has been out on bail for several years on health grounds.

Jaguar Fighter Jet Crashes In Gujarat, 1 Pilot Ejects, Search On For Another

A Jaguar fighter jet of the Indian Air Force has crashed in Gujarat's Jamnagar. One pilot has ejected and a search is on for the other.

"While one pilot safely ejected before the crash, another one is still missing. The aircraft caught fire after the crash landing. Police and firefighters have rushed to the spot and started searching for the missing pilot," news agency PTI quoted Superintendent of Police Premsukh Delu as saying.

Videos from the spot, in Suvarda village, 12 km from Jamnagar city, showed what appeared to be a field on fire with the cockpit of the crashed plane and its tail - which can be seen lying in different areas - also burning.

Indian Air Force (IAF) officials said the twin-seater Jaguar was on a routine training sortie when it crashed in.

The Jaguar is a twin-engine fighter bomber, with single and twin-seat variants, which is very widely used in the IAF. First inducted in the late 70s, it has been heavily upgraded over the years.

Petition Filed In High Court To Stop Justice Yashwant Varma From Taking Oath

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed before the Allahabad High Court's Lucknow bench on Wednesday seeking a directive to its Chief Justice to refrain from administering the oath to Justice Yashwant Varma, court sources said.

The PIL cited the ongoing in-house inquiry ordered by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) into the recovery of "four to five semi-burnt sacks" of Indian currency notes from the residence of Justice Varma following after a fire incident last month.

Justice Varma was recently transferred from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court in the midst of the cash stash row.

The PIL, filed by Vikash Chaturvedi, is expected to be heard on April 4, the sources said.

Advocate Ashok Pandey, representing Chaturvedi, argued that since the CJI has reportedly "directed the Allahabad High Court Chief Justice not to assign any judicial work to Justice Varma during the ongoing inquiry, there is no justification for proceeding with the oath ceremony".

The petitioner has also challenged the central government's notification dated March 28, 2025, which accepted the Supreme Court collegium's recommendation to transfer Justice Varma to the Allahabad High Court.

Halt Ops In 6 Weeks: High Court To Rapido, Other Bike Taxi Apps In Karnataka

The High Court of Karnataka has issued a strict directive to the state government to take necessary steps to suspend bike taxis within six weeks.

Uber India Systems Pvt Ltd, ANI Technologies Pvt Ltd (Ola) and others have applied for directions to the state government to consider the applications filed in 2022 for converting two-wheelers into transport vehicles.

All these applications have been filed by High Court Justice BM Shyam Prasad, who has dismissed them and issued a strict notice to Ola, Uber, and Rapido to halt the operations of their bike taxis.

The High Court ruled that the state government could not issue permission in this regard.

During the hearing of the petitions, the court noted that Ola, Uber, and Rapido were managing bike taxis based on an interim order issued by the court. It was allowed to work for six weeks and was supposed to be banned six weeks later.

The court also said that the state government should ensure this. Applicants cannot act as collectors of bike taxi services unless the state government provides the relevant guidelines under Section 93 of the Motor Vehicle Act of 1988 and the rules governing it, and a two-wheeler is registered with white number plates by the Karnataka Motor Vehicle Rules.

The state government has argued that bike taxis are illegal because they cannot operate as commercial vehicles. Considering this, the court has ordered that it is not possible.

AAP Vs BJP In Delhi Assembly Over Alleged Power Cuts In Delhi

The conflict between the BJP and Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party is intensifying over the frequent power cuts in Delhi and the two parties faced off over the matter in the assembly today.

The summer has come early this year and by March-end, fans and air-conditioners have started running.

Now AAP has alleged that reports of power cuts from across the capital have been growing, which the BJP has dismissed as fake information.

Today, AAP had given notice to discuss the power cuts in the assembly. But when Speaker Vijender Gupta did not give the opportunity, AAP MLAs walked out and raised slogans outside the House with posters.

Power minister Ashish Sood said action will be taken against those who spread "fake information". "There is no power crisis in Delhi and action will be taken against those who spread misleading news on power cuts," Mr Sood said.

AAP leaders have accused the BJP of failing to manage electricity distribution after assuming power in February.

On Monday former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Atishi claimed "mismanagement" on part of the BJP-led administration and said it was leading to the frequent outages. It was undoing everything AAP has done in the power sector, she added.

"How is it that in 10 years, there were no outages, but within a month of BJP rule, power cuts are back? This means only one thing: the BJP doesn't know how to run the government. They neither have the intention nor the capability to serve the people of Delhi," Atishi said.

The BJP claimed during the AAP's tenure, there were 21,000 power cuts in Delhi in a year. In January this year, there were 3,278 power cuts that lasted more than an hour, the party said.

Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva accused AAP of resorting to corruption in the management of the power sector.

"BJP-ruled cities like Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Bangalore have uninterrupted electricity supply. Even Uttar Pradesh, once known for poor electricity management, now has stable power supply," he was quoted as saying by news agency Press Trust of India.
