Huge quantities of drugs and banned substances valued at Rs 7.39 crores have been seized during raids at different places in Mizoram. The seized substances -- methamphetamine tablets, heroin, and foreign cigarettes -- were smuggled from Myanmar, officials said, adding seven people have been arrested during the raids.

At least 20,000 highly addictive Methamphetamine tablets worth Rs 6.66 crore were seized during a raid at Tuikhurhlu in Aizawl district. The drugs were seized when the smugglers were carrying the smuggled items in a vehicle, officials said. Four smugglers were arrested during the raid, they added.

In another operation, Assam Rifles seized foreign cigarettes worth Rs 41.60 lakh at Zokhawthar village along Myanmar border in Champhai district.

"What Has Father Of New India Done?": Nitish Kumar's Jibe At PM Modi

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday referred to Amruta Fadnavis' 'Father of the Nation of New India' remark to take a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and asked what has the "'new father' of 'new India' done for the nation?"

Amruta Fadnavis, wife of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, on December 21, had called PM Modi, the 'Father of the Nation' of 'New India'.

Taking a potshot with reference to the remark, Kumar said, "They had nothing to do with the fight for Independence. RSS didn't contribute to the fight for Independence...we read about the remark 'New father of the nation'...what has the 'new father' of 'new India' done for the nation?"

Earlier on December 21, Amruta Fadnavis had said, "India has two fathers of the nation. One belonged to the India of yore and the other is for a new India. I believe that Mahatma Gandhi is the 'Father of the Nation' of India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the 'Father of the Nation' of new India."

Retorting to the remark, Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole said that Mahatma Gandhi cannot be compared with anyone and took a jibe at the BJP's "new India."

"Father of the nation can't be compared with anyone. Their (BJP) 'new India' is only about making a few friends super-rich while the rest of the population remains downtrodden and hungry. We don't need this 'new India," Patole said.

"If they want to make Modi ji 'Father of the Nation' of new India just for few rich businessmen then let them make. I congratulate them for the same," Patole said.

Senior Congress leader Pramod Tiwari also hit out at the remarks made by the wife of the state's deputy chief minister.

"There can be two fathers in BJP but not in the country. There'll be only one Father of Nation..." Tiwari said.

Shimla's Hotels See Lowest Tourist Occupancy In 40 Years On New Year's Eve

The state capital was abuzz with activity as thousands of tourists made a beeline to Shimla to welcome the New Year but the occupancy in hotels was about 80 per cent, the lowest in the past four decades.

Snowfall in Manali, craze to see Atal Tunnel, the new gateway to Lahaul and Spiti, has increased the footfall to the Kullu district that registered over 90 per cent occupancy, office bearers of the hotel industry said.

Whereas no entry to tourist vehicles without a booking in Shimla city and apprehensions after last year's bomb hoax at New Year has hit the footfall in Shimla, they said.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had a stroll on the Mall Road on New Year's eve on Saturday evening.

He interacted with the local residents and the tourists and wished them a happy and prosperous year ahead.

A large number of tourists were seen roaming on the Mall Road and the Ridge to celebrate New Year and police have been deployed in strength to ensure that no untoward incident takes place.

The hoteliers claim that even in Covid years of 2020 and 2021, the restrictions were lifted by the year end and Shimla witnessed 95-100 per cent occupancy.

The Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) has organised events to mark Christmas and New Year in prime properties in Shimla, Manali, Chail, Dharamshala and other places and private hotels are also hosting events to welcome tourists on New Year.

As New Year falls on a weekend this time, we were expecting a huge rush but so far the occupancy is about 80 per cent which is the lowest in the past 37-38 years, vice president of Shimla Hotel and Restaurant Association Prince Kukreja said.

He said that snowfall at Manali and the craze for Atal Tunnel has turned tourists towards Manali. Besides this, the new Covid variant could also be a reason behind low footfall here, he said.

There is a huge rush of vehicles on roads and traffic jams are a common sight but this rush has not converted into occupancy and it seems that illegal tourism units are having a field day, Kukreja said.

However, president Tourism Industry Stakeholders Association M K Seth said that a large number of online bookings have been cancelled as the district administration decided not to allow tourist vehicles without hotel booking into the city and the occupancy in Shimla city is about 80 per cent, the lowest in the past four decades.

The orders of the district administration to not allow tourist vehicles without hotel bookings in Shimla city resulted in low footfall of visitors as they planned to go to destinations with lesser restrictions and more convenience, he said.

A huge chunk of tourists from the neighbouring states come without booking, Seth said.

The district administration, in a release, had informed that tourists with confirmed hotel bookings would be allowed in the city while tourist vehicles without confirmed bookings would be parked at Tutikandi parking.

Shuttle service (HRTC bus service) would be available to the city's Old Bus Stand, Central Telegraph Office. Tourist buses and heavy vehicles would not be allowed in the city. In case of heavy rush vehicles would be diverted through Tutikandi-Malyana road, officials said.

In case of heavy vehicular traffic, vehicles would be staggered from Shoghi. The idea is to provide safe and trouble-free stay for tourists and avoid traffic jams in the city, they added.

An additional police force has been deployed and the city has been divided into six sectors, Deputy Commissioner Shimla Aditya Negi said, adding that the responsibility of overseeing each sector has been assigned to the magistrate and nodal police officers have also been deployed in each sector to ensure traffic management and maintain law and order.

President Manali Hoteliers Association Mukesh Thakur said the occupancy is over 90 per cent here as Atal Tunnel (Rohtang) has increased the tourist footfall in the twin districts of Lahaul and Spiti and Kullu besides snowfall in Manali is a major attraction.

Gondola at Solang, Igloo stays in Hamta, winter sports activities in and around Manali, skiing and snowboarding courses offered by Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports Manali too are the major tourist attractions, he said.

However, he said the huge rush of vehicles is not converted into room occupancy as a large number of people from outside the state have taken properties on lease and are running accommodations as tourism units without registration.

These illegal properties are offering rooms at heavy discounts, Thakur added.

As many as 1.39 crore tourists visited Himachal till November 30 this year compared to 56.37 lakhs last year, as per data procured from the tourism department which was hoping to touch the pre-Covid tourist inflow figures by the year end as December is the peak tourist season.

The tourism and allied industry suffered immense losses during the Covid pandemic and tourist inflow dropped by 81 per cent in 2020 compared to 2019. The tourist arrival in Himachal Pradesh was 1.72 crore in 2019, which crashed to 32.13 lahks in 2020 and marginally recovered to 56.37 lahks in 2021.

With a surge in Covid cases around the globe, the state health had issued an advisory to observe Covid appropriate behaviour to keep a check on the increase in Covid cases in the near future.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has directed tourism and other departments to follow the slogan of 'Atithi Devo Bhava', facilitate the tourists and make adequate arrangements and proper traffic plans in all districts for the smooth flow of traffic.

He has also allowed eateries at tourist places to be opened round the clock.

Search Operation Underway In Jammu's Rajouri, Weeks After Civilian Killings

Security forces on Saturday launched a search operation in parts of Jammu and Kashmir's border town of Rajouri, where two civilians were killed in a firing incident outside an Army camp early this month, officials said.

The search was being conducted by joint teams of the Army and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Phalyana and adjoining localities, including the Tourism Reception Center and fish pond, they said.

"Took 50 MLAs From Under His Nose": D Fadnavis Taunts Uddhav Thackeray

In an apparent attack on Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said that the BJP is not afraid of him or his father and ex-CM Uddhav Thackeray.

While ridiculing Aaditya Thackeray's statement where he jibed at the state government, saying it is scared of a 32-year-old man, Eknath Shinde said that the Maharashtra government is not afraid of even his father.

"We are not afraid of even his father. We formed a government in the state by taking 50 MLAs from his party under his nose. He had said that Mumbai would burn, but not even a matchstick was burnt," Mr Fadnvis said.

Deputy Chief Minister was addressing the media after the State Assembly was adjourned sine die.

Earlier in the assembly, Mr Fadnavis said that an inquiry into alleged malpractices in Sree Siddhivinayak Temple Trust would be completed within one month.

The Winter session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly was adjourned sine die on Friday.

"Good Neighbourly Relations Do Not Mean Excusing...": Minister On Pak

In a veiled attack on Pakistan, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday said that terrorism cannot be used as a tool to force India on the "negotiating table".

While interacting with the Indian diaspora in Cyprus, without mentioning Pakistan, Mr Jaishankar said, "We will never normalize it. We will never allow terrorism to force us to the negotiating table. We want good neighbourly relations with everybody. But good neighbourly relations do not mean excusing or looking away or rationalizing terrorism. That we are very clear."

"The second, of course, is our borders. And we have challenges on our borders. The challenges on the borders intensified during the Covid period. And you all know that today the state of our relations with China is not normal. They are not normal because we will not agree to any attempt to change the Line of Actual Control (LAC) unilaterally. So on the foreign policy side, on the national security side, I can share with you a picture of firmness on diplomacy, on foreign policy, because that is something which I am," he added.

Talking about the expectations from India, S Jaishankar said that there are lots of expectations as New Delhi is seen as the one that solves problems. He further added that India is seen as a country with a strong economy and an independent nation.

India is negotiating 3 agreements with Cyprus - defence operations cooperation, migration and mobility agreement to facilitate legal movement of people of both the countries and agreement on International Solar Alliance, Mr Jaishankar said.

Mr Jaishankar said, "Finally, let me say a few words about Indians abroad. Indians abroad in the sense of Indian citizens staying abroad, people who are part of Indian families abroad, and overseas citizens. OCS Cardholders from the time the Modi government came, I think we have been very clear that Indians abroad are a great source of strength to the motherland. I mean, there are absolutely no two ways about this. But just saying this is not enough. As we become bigger, as more Indians go out, the global workplace increases."

"Today there are 30, 32, 33 million Indians, 3.3 crore Indians and people of Indian origin who live abroad, maybe about roughly two to one are non-citizens and citizens. Now, when such a large number of people live abroad and the benefits to India are visible to us in many ways, the big issue which arises is what is the obligation of India? And the obligation of India is really to take care of them, to take care of them to the best possible ability, especially in the most difficult situations. So you have seen in the last seven or eight years, wherever Indians have been in difficulty, the Indian government, the Indian state is there for them," he added.

S Jaishankar mentioned his 40 years of experience in the foreign ministry and said that this has been really a complete transformation of how embassies and high commissions and ministries and officials think about the Indian community.

"Consistently Called For End To Violence": India's UN Envoy On Ukraine War

India's Permanent Ambassador to United Nations Ruchira Kamboj on Wednesday underscored New Delhi's stand on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and said that India has consistently called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and an end to the violence.

Responding to a question asked on how India is playing a mediatory role to resolve the Russia-Ukraine war, Ms Kamboj stated how time and again, India has called upon both sides to return to the path of diplomacy and dialogue and has also expressed its support for all diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.

"India has consistently called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and an end to the violence. India has called upon both sides to return to the path of diplomacy and dialogue and has also expressed its support for all diplomatic efforts to end the conflict," Ms Kamboj told ANI.

The UN Ambassador also highlighted the recent telephonic conversation that took place between the Ukrainian President and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 27 this year in which he assured India's commitment to continue providing humanitarian assistance for the affected civilian population.

Zelenskyy, in a phone call to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, sought India's help in the implementation of a peace formula with Russia.

PM Modi strongly reiterated his call for an immediate cessation of hostilities, saying that both sides should revert to dialogue and diplomacy to find a lasting solution to their differences, read Prime Minister's Office press release.

He also conveyed India's support for any peace efforts and assured India's commitment to continue providing humanitarian assistance for the affected civilian population, added the release.

"I had a phone call with PM Modi and wished a successful G20 presidency. It was on this platform that I announced the peace formula and now I count on India's participation in its implementation. I also thanked for humanitarian aid and support in the UN," tweeted the Ukrainian President.

Meanwhile, the President of Ukraine conveyed his best wishes for India's Presidency of the G20.

Regarding India's role, Ambassador Kamboj further added by throwing light on PM Modi's statement to President Zelensky in which he reaffirmed that India supports any peace effort and is committed to continuing to provide humanitarian assistance to the affected civilian population.

"The prime minister, the Indian Prime minister, has spoken to the Presidents of Ukraine and Russia on multiple occasions and reiterated India's position, including with President Zelensky of Ukraine on 27 December this year. The external affairs minister has also explained our stance on multiple occasions. As far as your question on what role India is playing, I can only quote what the Indian Prime Minister told President Zelensky recently that India supports any peace effort and we are committed to continuing to provide humanitarian assistance to the affected civilian population," Ms Kamboj said.
Sharing views on UN reforms, India's Permanent ambassador underlined the fact that reform of the same Security Council is the need of the hour as a majority of member states feel the need for the same to take place.

"We know that the discussions on reforms have been meandering aimlessly, with a few countries using the smokescreen of consensus to avoid any progress. Meanwhile, the world is changing and has changed dramatically, be it in terms of economic prosperity, technology capabilities, political influence, and developmental progress.

There is an overwhelming majority of member states feel that reforms are the need of the hour," the ambassador added.
This year at the UNGA, more than 70 leaders made a strong case for reforms throughout the high-level week. The goal of a new multilateral system's orientation, or norms as we call them in India, is to increase multilateralism's effectiveness and legitimacy in the eyes of the international community and the general public worldwide.

India hosted a special meeting of the UN Security Council's CTC in October to discuss terror financing through crypto-currency and the use of drones in the new-age terrorism. On October 29, the CTC unanimously adopted the Delhi Declaration on countering the use of new and emerging technologies for terrorist purposes.

The Declaration included a list of actions, including the choice to keep working on the three themes of the Special Meeting's recommendations and the intention to create a set of non-binding guiding principles to help member states counter the threat posed by the use of new and emerging technologies for terrorist purposes.

India's Permanent ambassador recalled the special meeting held in India, which resulted in the landmark Delhi Declaration. "And this was followed up by a presidential statement on counter-terrorism in December during our current presidency," she added.

Summing up India's tenure as a UNSC member and its December presidency, Ms Kamboj quoted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to say that India used the prestige and experience of being the largest democracy in the world for the benefit of the whole world.

Rajasthan Minister Blames BJP For Teacher Recruitment Exam Paper Leak

Rajasthan Minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas on Wednesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of colluding with paper leak mafias and said that it was the state government's efforts behind the arrests made in connection to the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) paper leak case.

"BJP is in cahoots with the paper-leak mafias. It was the Rajasthan government who arrested those who leaked the RPSC teachers' recruitment exam paper," the minister said while speaking to the media on the occasion of the 138th Foundation day of Congress.

Rajasthan Police have arrested 55 people including a government school headmaster in connection to the paper leak of the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) teachers' recruitment examination.

The arrested women were sent to police remand for two days while the men were sent for five days after they were produced before the magistrate on Sunday.

According to the police, the 'mastermind' of the case has been identified as Suresh Vishnoi, a government school headmaster posted at a government school in Jalore district.

The Gehlot government was cornered by the opposition parties on the paper leak issue for the last few days as the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) cancelled the 2nd-grade teacher competitive examination 2022 for General Knowledge after the leak of paper and rescheduled it for January 29.

BJP MP Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore also took a swipe at the state government saying, the state is not fulfilling its responsibilities.

"In the last four years, 16 times exam papers have been leaked. Our demand for a CBI inquiry was ignored. Permission is not being given to CBI as the government knows that big names will be revealed. It's unfortunate that the Rajasthan government is not fulfilling its responsibilities," he said on Monday.

Union Jal Shakti Minister and Jodhpur BJP MP Gajendra Singh Shekhawat had on Sunday demanded a Central Bureau Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the scam.

Girl Student Made Co-Accused In Rajasthan Professor Sexual Favours Case

A BTech final-year student of Rajasthan Technical University was arrested on Wednesday, days after an associate professor at the varsity was held for allegedly demanding sexual favours from students and failing them when rebuffed, police said.

The girl student, a native of Jaipur, has been made co-accused alongside the accused associate professor Girish Parmar and a male final-year student who allegedly mediated on his behalf.

The trio was sent to judicial custody till January 10 by a local court, they said.

The Special Investigations Team (SIT) probing into the incident found that Parmar allegedly used exams to trap women students, manipulated the examination papers and even assigned marks on blank answer copies, it said.

The SIT seized several answer copies from Parmar's home and has decided to investigate the sixth semester and mid-term exam results.

Deputy Superintendent of Police and SIT member Amar Singh said the co-accused female student allegedly worked with the professor, checked answer copies and gave marks according to her discretion. She even set the questions for semester exams in the department.

Parmar was arrested on December 21 for allegedly demanding sexual favours from a final-year student and failing her in his subject after he was rebuffed.

He also allegedly tried to mount pressure on the student through one of her classmates, who has also been arrested.
