A team of DRI officials intercepted the passenger on Monday and found 2.58 kg of cocaine concealed in 12 soap bars in his trolley bag, he said.

Row Over Certain Verse In Ramcharitmanas "5,000 Years Old": Akhilesh Yadav

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday said he is not against Ramcharitmanas but asserted that the controversy over a certain verse of the Hindu epic is "5,000 years old".

During the budget discussion in Uttar Pradesh Assembly, Mr Yadav said, "We are not against Ramcharitmanas. Why do you do 'prachar'. God is for all and not for anyone (person). You take donations (for the construction of Ram temple) so has God become yours. But whatever is wrong is wrong." Mentioning the word 'tadan' in one of the verses of Ramcharitmanas, he said, "If you make one person stand to know what is the meaning of 'tadan', then we can also make 10 stand about this. Will you make anyone stand up and explain the meaning of 'tadan'? You tell what the situation is in UP."

While reciting a poem by Ramdhari Singh Dinkar on the issue, Mr Yadav said, "This fight is not of today. This fight is 5,000 years old."

"I did not ask about Ramcharitmanas. I had said that the Leader of the House should tell what is a 'Shudra'. If this 'Shudra' does not become your shield, then you could not have come to power."

Mr Yadav was mentioning a verse "Dhol, ganwar, shudra, pashu, naari, sakal tadan ke adhikari" on which a controversy erupted last month after SP leader Swami Prasad Maurya alleged that certain verses of the Ramcharitmanas "insult" a large section of society on the basis of caste and demanded that these be "banned".

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday accused Samajwadi Party of humiliating 100 crore Hindus by burning a copy of Ramcharitmanas.

CM Adityanath, explaining the verse, which was described as objectionable by SP leader Maurya, had said that 'tadan' meant 'dekhbhal' (caring).

Reacting on an alleged comment by Mr Adityanath, Akhilesh Yadav said, "if a person speaks about someone's father, then the other can also do so. But I will not do so as 'Netaji' (Mulayam Singh Yadav) has not given such values to me." Ramcharitmanas, an epic poem in Awadhi language, is based on the Ramayana and has been composed by 16th-century Bhakti poet Tulsidas.

Bail Plea Of Hemant Soren's Aide Rejected In Jharkhand Illegal Mining Case

The Jharkhand High Court on Tuesday rejected the bail plea of Pankaj Mishra, the former political representative of Chief Minister Hemant Soren, in a money laundering case related to illegal mining.

Mr Mishra was arrested in July last year by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Justice Gautam Kumar Choudhary dismissed Mr Mishra's bail application after hearing arguments in the case.

The ED had filed a charge sheet against Mr Mishra and his two aides -- Bachhu Yadav and Prem Prakash -- on September 16 last year before a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Ranchi.

"PMLA investigation revealed that Pankaj Mishra, who enjoys political clout, being the representative of the Chief Minister, MLA from Barhait, Sahibganj, Jharkhand controls the illegal mining businesses as well as inland ferry services in Sahibganj and its adjoining areas through his accomplices," the ED had alleged in a statement earlier.

"He exercises considerable control over the mining of stone chips and boulders as well as installation and operations of several crushers, set up across various mining sites in Sahibganj," the statement had claimed.

It had said proceeds of crime amounting to about Rs 42 crore "acquired" by Mr Mishra have been identified.

The agency had also claimed that it has "identified" proceeds of crimes, relating to illegal mining in the state, to the tune of more than Rs 1,000 crore.

The ED filed a case under the PMLA against Mr Mishra in March last year, alleging that he "illegally grabbed or amassed huge assets in his favour".

It took cognisance of a state police FIR filed against Mr Mishra at Barharwa police station in Sahibganj district, and some other police complaints filed in illegal mining trade instances under various sections of the Arms Act and Explosive Substances Act, among others.

How AAP Will Divide Up Manish Sisodia's 18 Portfolios

The 18 portfolios of the Delhi government handled by Manish Sisodia will be divided among two ministers of the Delhi government for now, sources have told NDTV. Kailash Gahlot and Raaj Kumar Anand will each be in charge of two signature portfolios of Mr Sisodia, sources said.

Mr Anand will be looking after the showcase departments of Education and Health, which the Aam Aadmi Party considers its crown jewels.

Kailash Gehlot, one of the senior members of Arvind Kejriwal's cabinet, will be in charge of the vital power and water departments. AAP's delivery on its promise of free power and water in Delhi is seen as a key aspect of its sweeping victory in Punjab.

He will also oversee finance, the most crucial department ahead of the Delhi budget due in March.

Mr Sisodia, arrested in connection with the alleged liquor scam in Delhi, stepped down as a minister today. So did another Delhi minister, Satyendar Jain, who has been in jail for around eight months.

Before quitting, Mr Sisodia was handling 18 of Delhi's 33 ministries, including health, which was the responsibility of Satyendar Jain till his arrest.

Party sources said there will be no addition to the cabinet till the Delhi budget is presented next month.

Sources say Mr Gahlot will take over eight portfolios that also include Home, Urban Development, Planning, Public works Department, Irrigation and Flood Control. Mr Anand's share includes Land and Building, Vigilance, Services, Tourism, Art Culture and Language, Labour, Employment and Industries.

The AAP government had started out with seven ministers, and now has only five. Mr Kejriwal, the face of the party and the government, has not handled any department so far.

There is speculation that the crunch might tie him up with governance in Delhi ahead of a string of state elections this year and the general elections the next.

AAP, which got the national party status with last year's Gujarat elections, was planning to contest in Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

Mr Sisodia faces corruption allegations in connection with a new liquor sale policy in 2021. The CBI contends that liquor companies were involved in framing of the policy, for which kickbacks to the tune of Rs 30 crore were paid by a liquor lobby it dubbed the "South Group".

The policy would have led to a 12 per cent profit for them, of which 6 per cent was routed to public servants through middlemen, the agency claimed.

"Many Manish Sisodias Behind Bars": Ashok Gehlot

A day after the CBI arrested Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday said "many Sisodias" have been arrested in the country but people don't get to know about them.

There is "terror" of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED), and Income Tax department in the country, while the judiciary and Election Commission are under pressure, he claimed.

Mr Sisodia was arrested by the CBI on Sunday evening in connection with alleged corruption in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy 2021-22.

A special court in Delhi on Monday sent him to five-day CBI custody for effective interrogation to unravel the alleged scam.

"Many Sisodias have been arrested in the country," Mr Gehlot told reporters in Sikar in response to a question.

People don't find out about them. They found out about Mr Sisodia's arrest because he is a deputy chief minister, he said.

"There are many such instances where journalists, writers and litterateurs have been put behind bars. The general public will have to think about what is happening in the country," he said.

Delhi's ruling AAP claims Mr Sisodia is innocent and has been arrested due to political vendetta. The party on Monday staged protests across the country against Mr Sisodia's arrest.

Mr Gehlot further claimed there is "terror" of central probe agencies and an atmosphere of tension and violence prevails in the country.

"There is severe inflation, unemployment, an atmosphere of tension and violence in the country, there is terror of ED, Income Tax department and CBI. The judiciary and the Election Commission are under pressure and the gap between the rich and the poor is growing. These issues have shaken the whole country," the chief minister said.

"The government of India is not paying attention to this. All... issues are of great importance. It is its duty to pay attention to them when the Opposition raises them through dharnas, demonstrations and yatras ... like (Congress leader) Rahul Gandhi did," he said.

It is the country's misfortune that these "fascist" people, who have no faith in democracy, have formed the government by putting on the mask of democracy.

Referring to the Rajasthan government's Chiranjeevi Health Insurance Scheme and other welfare initiatives, Mr Gehlot said these measures are being discussed across the country and the state has set an example.

No One Will Be Allowed To Disturb Punjab's Hard-Earned Peace: BS Mann

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday said his government was committed to maintaining law and order in the state and no one would be allowed to disturb the hard-earned peace.

Referring to the insurgency period in Punjab, Mr Mann said the state and its people have suffered a lot in the past and they only want peace and progress.

Though some fissiparous forces are continuously trying to derail the peace and progress of the state, their nefarious designs will not be allowed to succeed, the chief minister said, adding no one will be allowed to disturb the hard-earned peace in the state.

He reiterated that those who carried the Guru Granth Sahib to a police station in Ajnala in Amritsar as a shield cannot be called the 'waris' (heir) of Punjab.

His remarks came days after self-styled Sikh preacher and Khalistani sympathiser Amritpal Singh and his supporters, some of them brandishing swords and guns, broke through barricades and barged into a police station in Ajnala on the outskirts of the Amritsar city on Thursday, extracting an assurance from the police that his aide and kidnapping case accused Lovepreet Singh would be released.

Amritpal heads an organisation called 'Waris Punjab De." This is an unpardonable crime which must be condemned by one and all, Mr Mann was quoted as saying in an official statement.

The chief minister said, "The Guru Granth Sahib is a source of inspiration for all of us and we must take inspiration from it rather than taking cover under it for protection from unlawful activities." The AAP government in Punjab has come under opposition attack which has alleged that the law-and-order situation in the state has broken down.

The chief minister, speaking in Gujarat's Bhavnagar, said that some people funded from across the border are trying to destabilise peace and progress in Punjab.

Such people are acting as puppets in the hands of Pakistan. But the Punjab Police personnel are capable of safeguarding the interests of the state and its people, Mr Mann said.

He said that, earlier, parties used to seek votes on the "divisive agenda".

However, a paradigm shift was witnessed in the political system with the entry of AAP, which forced the traditional parties to reset their agenda, Mr Mann said.

He said the AAP was a party of warriors who can do anything for the well-being of the people.

In mere 11 months, the AAP government has fulfilled the major guarantees promised to the people. Top priority is being accorded to health, education and employment, Mr Mann said.

Kerala Temple Introduces Mechanical Elephant For Performing Rituals

In a first in Kerala, a life-like mechanical elephant was on Sunday dedicated to the deity in a temple near here for performing daily rituals from now on, instead of a real pachyderm.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India joined hands with award-winning actor Parvathy Thiruvothu, and held the 'Nadayiruthal' ceremony of 'Irinjadappilly Raman', a robotic elephant, at Irinjadappilly Sree Krishna Temple in the district.

PETA said Raman will help conduct ceremonies at the temple in a safe and cruelty-free manner and thereby supports real elephants' rehabilitation and lives in forests and end the horror of captivity for them.

"An inaugural ceremony held today was followed by a performance by the percussion ensemble led by Peruvanam Satheesan Marar. Subjecting live elephants to the extreme loudness of the timpani is cruel, as it is damaging and distressing for live elephants," PETA said in a release.

Ms Thiruvothu said these days we have access to understanding what animals are forced to endure when humans use them for entertainment.

"It's high time we made stronger and more impactful strides towards stopping such abuse and letting animals have respectful and dignified lives... I am delighted to support PETA India in helping Sree Krishna Temple worshippers experience the joy and sanctity of religious functions in an exciting, modern, and conscientious manner," she was quoted in the release.

Head priest of the temple Rajkumar Namboothiri said they were "extremely happy and grateful" to receive the mechanical elephant which will help them to conduct rituals and festivals in a cruelty-free manner and hoped that other shrines also consider replacing live elephants for rituals.

PETA claimed most elephants in captivity in the country, including in Kerala, are being held illegally or have been transported to a different state without permission.

The frustration of captivity leads elephants to develop and display abnormal behaviour, PETA said, adding that, at their wit's end, frustrated elephants often snap and try to break free, running amok and so harming humans, other animals, and property.

"According to figures compiled by the Heritage Animal Task Force, captive elephants killed 526 people in Kerala in a 15-year period. Thechikkattukavu Ramachandran, who has been in captivity for about 40 years and is one of the most often used elephants in Kerala's festival circuit, has reportedly killed 13 individuals-- six mahouts, four women, and three elephants," the release said.

PETA urged all venues and events using elephants to switch to lifelike mechanical elephants or other means in place of real elephants.

It also called for retiring elephants already in captivity to sanctuaries where they can live unchained and in the company of other elephants, healing psychologically and physically from the trauma of years of isolation, captivity, and abuse.

"Inexcusable Slip-Up": Congress On Abul Kalam Azad Missing From Poster

The Congress apologised on Sunday after an advertisement on its 85th plenary session, which did not feature India's first education minister and freedom fighter Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, triggered a controversy and the party received flak from several quarters.

The party said it was "an inexcusable slip-up", for which responsibility was being fixed and action would be taken.

The full-page advertisement, published in dailies on the third day of the plenary session on Saturday, featured Congress leaders of the past -- Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, B R Ambedkar, Subhas Chandra Bose, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, P V Narasimha Rao and Sarojini Naidu.

Sharing the advertisement on Twitter, Congress MP Manish Tewari said, "The @INCIndia has a pantheon of Muslim leaders who struggled against fissiparous tendencies especially within their community that led to creation of Pakistan & dedicated themselves to inclusive idea of India. Someone wants to airbrush their contribution from annals of History."

Several people hit out at the Congress for leaving out Azad in its advertisement.

"Today an ad released by INC did not carry a photograph of Maulana Azad. It was an inexcusable slipup. Responsibility for it is being fixed & action will be taken," Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a tweet.

"Meanwhile this is a most sincere apology from us. He will always remain an iconic & inspiring figure for us & India," he said.

Mr Ramesh also responded to a tweet by a party leader which pointed out that Azad's picture featured on the dias of the plenary session, saying, "Hope all those who took us to task (justifiable as it may have been) for one goof do take note."

BSP MP Kunwar Danish Ali hit out at the Congress, saying Rahul Gandhi will have to confront and clean RSS elements in his party that are responsible for such a self-goal.

"How can INC forget Maulana Azad and his contribution? Earlier also, Pranab Mukherjee and Shivraj Patil approved installation of Savarkar's portrait in Parliament," Mr Ali said.

BJP MP and its youth wing president Tejasvi Surya said it was "hypocritical" on the part of the Congress to include Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, B R Ambedkar, Subhas Chandra Bose, Lal Bahadur Shastri and P V Narasimha Rao in its advertisement.

"The nation remembers how Nehru family treated these stalwarts & tried erasing their legacy. This advert is only laughable!" he tweeted.

Arvind Kejriwal's First Big Challenge After Manish Sisodia's Arrest

The Arvind Kejriwal government is staring at a possible crisis with the CBI arresting Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia who holds as many as 18 of the total 33 departments, including education, finance and home.

The arrest of Mr Sisodia comes after that of Satyendar Jain, Delhi's then health minister, in June last year. Both have led what the Aam Aadmi Party describes as the successful transformation of Delhi's education and health services, contributing to the party's popularity and continued electoral success.

Their absence leaves Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal with no heavyweight lieutenant to implement his governance agenda in Delhi.

The immediate challenge for Mr Kejriwal is to present the Delhi government budget as scheduled and find Mr Sisodia's replacement.

Sources in the Aam Aadmi Party said Revenue Minister Kailash Gahlot may present the Delhi government budget for the next financial year.

"As there was a possibility that the deputy chief minister may be arrested by the CBI, Mr Gahlot was attending budget-related meetings for the last few days.

"Gahlot is likely to present the 2023-24 budget. It is scheduled to be presented next month," an AAP functionary told PTI.

According to the Delhi government's websites, there are a total of 33 departments.

Of these, Mr Sisodia looks after 18, including health, education, public works department (PWD), services, finance, power, home and urban development. He is also in charge of all other departments not specifically allotted to any minister.

Apart from Mr Kejriwal, the Delhi government has six cabinet ministers, including jailed Satyendar Jain who is still a minister without a portfolio. Mr Jain was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate last year in connection with a money laundering case.

Environment Minister Gopal Rai has only three departments while Imran Hussain is in charge of only two departments -- food and civil supplies, and election.

Kailash Gahlot is in charge of six departments, including revenue, and transport while Raj Kumar Anand has four portfolios.

The CBI on Sunday evening arrested Mr Sisodia, who is close to Mr Kejriwal, in connection with alleged corruption in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped excise policy for 2021-22 after nearly eight hours of questioning.

This was the second round of questioning of Mr Sisodia after the agency registered a case on August 17 last year. He was quizzed on October 17 last year.

Mr Kejriwal termed the arrest "dirty politics" and asserted that his deputy was innocent.

"Manish is innocent. His arrest is dirty politics. It has angered people quite a lot. People are watching everything. People now understand everything and will give a reply to this. It will boost our spirit and our struggle will only get stronger," Mr Kejriwal said in a tweet in Hindi.

Manish Sisodia To Be Questioned By CBI In Liquor Policy Case Today

  1. The CBI called Mr Sisodia for questioning on February 19. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, who is also Delhi's Finance Minister, however, sought a week's time citing a tight schedule as he has been preparing the Delhi Budget. The CBI agreed to his request.
  2. Mr Sisodia has said he will "fully cooperate" with the central agency. The BJP's Delhi unit, however, called Mr Sisodia's request an "excuse". "Budget was an excuse. The objective was to run," Delhi BJP spokesperson Harish Khurana had said in a statement.
  3. Mr Sisodia and others face corruption allegations in bringing a new liquor sale policy in the national capital. Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena had ordered the CBI probe last year.
  4. Thereafter, the Delhi government reverted to the old liquor policy and blamed the Lieutenant Governor for loss of revenue worth crores of rupees that the AAP government claimed would have come if the new policy had continued.
  5. The BJP said the Delhi government went back to the old liquor sale policy to cover up corruption in the excise department held by Mr Sisodia. The CBI has named seven accused in the liquor policy case chargesheet, which has no mention of Mr Sisodia.
  6. The CBI has said it is focusing on the alleged influence of a "South Lobby" of businessmen and politicians making the Delhi liquor policy to swing in their favour using middlemen, traders and bureaucrats. Recently, the CBI arrested Butchibabu Gorantla, a former chartered accountant of K Kavitha, leader of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi and daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao.
  7. The AAP alleged the BJP at the centre was behind the Lieutenant Governor's decision to send the CBI after Mr Sisodia. The liquor policy case soon found itself on top of the long list of friction points between the AAP and the Lieutenant Governor, and by extension the centre.
  8. The most recent example of the friction between the Lieutenant Governor and the AAP was when the Supreme Court agreed to the AAP's request that members of Delhi's civic body nominated by the Lieutenant Governor can't vote in the mayor election.
  9. Mr Sisodia said the CBI summon was the BJP's way of getting even after it failed in its attempt to get the nominated members to vote.
  10. Even before the mayor election, back in November last year, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had alleged that the centre, with the Lieutenant Governor working as a proxy, wanted to harm the AAP's election campaign in Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The BJP had swept the polls.

PM Modi Has "Blessings" Of People: I&B Minister Anurag Thakur

Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Friday hit out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his "fascism in India" remark, saying all efforts to "defame" and "destabilise" the country will fail as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has the "blessings" of the people.

He also dismissed allegations of assault on citizens' right to free speech and press freedom under the Modi government. The Congress leader has forgotten the "tough time" people had to face when Emergency was imposed in the country during the Indira Gandhi government, Mr Thakur said.

Law will take its course if anyone talks about "breaking" India and makes remarks that can create tension in society and in the country, the information and broadcasting minister said.

Anurag Thakur was replying to questions asked by the anchor of an event 'Arth-A Culture Fest' at the Sunder Nursery.

In an interview to Italian daily "Corriere della Sera" recently, Rahul Gandhi had said, "Fascism is already there. Democratic structures collapse. Parliament is no longer working. I haven't been able to speak for two years, as soon as I speak they take my microphone off. The balance of powers is off. Justice is not independent. Centralism is absolute. The press is no longer free." The "manifestation of thought" is prohibited in India, he had alleged.

"The concentration of wealth is scandalous. Hindu extremists of the RSS sect have infiltrated every institution and are conditioning it. People see no future because they are scared," Rahul Gandhi had said and had added that Prime Minister Modi can be defeated in the (general) elections if the opposition presented an alternative vision to "fascism".

Reacting to Mr Gandhi's remarks, the minister said, "If at all the country witnessed any Emergency, any ban imposed on common citizens and the media, it was done during the Indira Gandhi regime, who was Rahul Gandhi's grandmother." "Perhaps he has forgotten what happened at that time and the kind of tough time people of this country passed through. If anyone stood against that it was the BJP. We were known as the Jan Sangh at that time," he said, adding that "we fought, citizens of the country fought".

Be it in Parliament or on streets, everyone in the country has freedom to express one's thoughts, he said. "We have always been supporters of freedom of speech," the BJP leader said.

Without naming anyone, Mr Thakur said some "forces in the world" are making efforts to "defame and destabilise India through one after another propaganda under one agenda".

"But they won't be able to stop India from marching ahead, no matter if they catch hold of any channel, billionaire or trillionaire," he said.

The minister said the biggest strength of a democracy are its people and their votes. "Nothing will happen with all such efforts because people are rallying behind Modi ji, because Modi ji has blessings of 140 crore people of this country. World has come to know India's strength," he added.

Anurag Thakur also dismissed Rahul Gandhi's charge of "press is no longer free", saying "people have the right to make their point in newspapers and on TV channels".

He said India has emerged as the world's fastest growing economy under Prime Minister Modi's leadership.

"We could see India's rise as significant implications for the rest of the world...Be it IMF, World Bank, Silicon Valley or multinational companies, India is making a splash everywhere across the globe. This is the image of new India. Modi ji has taken India on a new path,” he added.

He alleged that Rahul Gandhi was gripped by the "mindset of slavery" and asked him to get freedom from it. Thakur also asked the Congress leader to fulfil his "duties as a citizen of India".

"It is unfortunate that when China was attacking, Rahul Gandhi was dining with the Chinese ambassador and leaders… Rahul Gandhi's Rajiv Gandhi foundation gets Chinese funding. Perhaps because he sees only China's progress. He can't see India's progress,” he charged.

"No Intention To Abolish Kolkata Tram": Bengal Government

The tramways carnival is back in Kolkata after a gap of four years on Friday, marking 150 years of the only operational tram system in the country.

Since 1996, 'Tramjatra', a global collaboration of tram enthusiasts, artists, environmentalists, and communities, have been in motion in Melbourne and Kolkata. The festival highlights the value of trams through awareness campaigns for cultural heritage, healthy living and sustainability.

The theme of this year's Tramjatra is Heritage, Clean Air and Green Mobility.

For five days, colourful trams will travel across the city displaying artworks, including paintings and posters with sustainable development goal themes.

Local youths will perform musical and theatrical performances inside moving trams, while Roberto D' Andrea, a retired tram conductor from the Australian city would distribute specially designed 'Tramjatra' cards to passengers.

"We are unable to run trams on all the routes due to construction of flyovers and Metro Rail infrastructure. The government has no intention to abolish trams from Kolkata. We are discussing with Kolkata Municipal Corporation and Kolkata Police to run trams in some of the routes without affecting traffic," Transport Minister Snehasis Chakraborty said.

Mr Chakraborty, who was present at the inaugural function of the carnival at Esplanade terminus in central Kolkata, said that tram is "our emotion and is our heritage. I am here today not to give farewell to the Kolkata Tram. But due to increasing population and vehicles and with no expansion of roads, it is difficult to run trams everywhere." Plans are there to make a heritage route surrounding the Maidan area, he said.

Roberto D'Andrea, the retired tram conductor from Melbourne, said that coming from another 'great tram city', it is a privilege for him to be present at the 150th anniversary of Kolkata's tram service.

"We've come back with the privilege of celebrating heritage. We've come back with the desire to help lower the levels of air pollution," he told PTI.

Film-maker and singer Anjan Dutta was present at the event.

The first tram in the city rolled out on the tracks on February 24, 1873.

6 Killed, 35 Injured After Truck Hits 2 Parked Buses In Madhya Pradesh

Six people were killed and at least 35 others injured after a truck hit two buses parked on the side of a road on the Rewa-Satna border in Madhya Pradesh on Friday, officials said.

Eyewitnesses claimed that the accident took place around 9 pm and the people in the buses were returning from the 'Kol Mahakumbh' in Satna city.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah had addressed the event earlier in the day on the occasion of Shabri Mata Jayanti.

Quoting officials, Sidhi District Collector Saket Malviya said the truck coming from the Rewa side hit the buses from behind and 35 people suffered injuries.

Earlier, Additional Chief Secretary, Home, Rajesh Rajora had told PTI: "Six people were killed and 10 others injured as a speeding truck hit two stationary buses on the Rewa-Satna border." The injured are being taken to the Rewa Medical College, he said.

The eyewitnesses said that the truck hit the buses from behind and one of the buses overturned and fell into a ditch. The accident took place near the Mohania tunnel around 9 pm, they said.

The buses had stopped so that food packets could be given to passengers who were returning after attending the Mahakumbh, the eyewitnesses said.

Mr Rajora said top officials, including the collectors and the superintendents of police, of Sidhi and Rewa districts reached the spot and all passengers have been rescued.

Mr Malviya said that according to information given by officials, a tyre of the truck had burst following which the driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed the parked buses.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and state BJP president Vishnu Dutt Sharma rushed to the spot from Satna, the official said.

The chief minister left for Rewa Medical College from the spot after meeting officials and others to to meet the injured passengers, officials said.

Chief Minister Chouhan has directed officials to supervise the treatment of the injured persons and asked them to keep the Rewa Medical College and Sidhi District Hospital on alert, they said.

Former chief ministers Kamal Nath and Digvijaya Singh expressed grief over the accident.

Mr Nath in a tweet claimed that over 50 passengers were injured in the accident, while Mr Singh in a tweet demanded Rs 50 lakh compensation to the family of those who died in the accident and Rs 5 lakh to the injured persons.

Explained: Who Is Lovepreet Singh, Punjab Radical Leader's Aide Freed By Cops

Lovepreet Singh walked out of jail today after a pro-Khalistan organisation lay siege to Ajnala police station in Punjab's Amritsar. But who is he and who is the Amritpal Singh that led the group to Ajnala police station.

Who is Lovepreet Singh

Lovepreet Singh aka Toofan Singh belongs from Gurdaspur in Punjab. He was arrested for his connection in a kidnapping and assault case. Lovepreet Singh is also a part of Waris Punjab De, and a close aide of Waris Punjab De's chief Amritpal Singh.

Who is Amritpal Singh

Amritpal Singh is the chief of Waris Punjab De, a separatist organisation started by Deep Sidhu. Amritpal Singh returned from Dubai last year. He was recently made the head of Waris Punjab De at an event in Moga district, the village of Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale.

What happened on February 23 at Ajnala police station

After Lovepreet Singh's arrest on February 16, Amritpal Singh warned the police to release him, or else he would come with a huge crowd on February 23. Amritpal Singh's supporters started gathering in the morning at Ajnala station.

The police tried to stop them since they were low in number. Then Amritpal Singh reached Ajnala from Raia's village Jallupur Khera. In half an hour, the situation became such that the police were attacked with swords. Several policemen including senior officers, at Ajnala police post were taken over by Amritpal Singh and his supporters.

What did Punjab Police do

The Punjab Police decided to form a special investigative team to probe the first information report (FIR). Lovepreet Singh was released at 4 pm. "Want to ensure peace. It's hard-earned in Punjab," the Punjab Police chief said.

The whole incident has come at the time when Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has been inviting investments to Punjab. This event is not the standalone incident of a separatist uprising in the state. There have been cases in the previous government as well. For now, the situation remains tricky for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab.

Adani Group Sought 94,000 Square Metres Of Land In Gujarat For Township

The Gautam Adani group has sought 94,000 square metres of 'gauchar' (grazing land) and non-arable land from the Gujarat government to build a township and special economic zone, the state Assembly was informed on Friday.

Responding to a query raised by Aam Aadmi Party's Jamjodhpur MLA Hemant Ahir, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, who handles the revenue portfolio, said the group had sought 93,900 square metres of land in Khodiyar village in Ahmedabad and Dantali village in Gandhinagar.

Bhupendra Patel, in his written reply, informed the House the Adani Group had sought this land in exchange for its own plots of equal area in these villages.

It has also sought 202 square metres of non-arable land in Jaspur village in Gandhinagar without this exchange mechanism, the Chief Minister said.

The Adani Group wants land in Ahmedabad district to "develop a Special Economic Zone as part of its state-of-the-art township" while land in Gandhinagar district has been sought for the purpose of a township, the Chief Minister said.

These demands are pending with the state government, Mr Patel added.

The Budget session of the Gujarat Assembly is currently underway.

Trinamool Will Win To Sustain Democracy: Meghalaya Leader Of Opposition

Former Meghalaya Chief minister Mukul Sangma claimed on Friday that Trinamool Congress will outshine other parties in the Assembly Elections scheduled set to be held on February 27.

"You can feel the pulse here. The spirit of true democracy, of the people, by the people and for the people, must be reinforced for the purpose of sustaining the democracy and that's what we have done," Mukul Sangma said to NDTV.

Taking on the 'outsider' branding of the TMC by other parties, the leader of the opposition said, "Today you see all my supporters, who are the outsiders here? They all are part and parcel of the people who create this the whole demography. The Garo, Khasi, Jaintia and other tribes coexist along with non-tribals."

The kind of narrative being used against the TMC is not at all expected from this civilized state, he added.

Mukul Sangma had parted ways with the Congress with 11 other MLAs to join TMC in 2021.

"I used to tell people that BJP's narrative is camouflaged by the so-called rhetoric of development. If BJP is concerned about the people of the state and development, then why did they not act on the corruption and irregularities allegation brought to their notice?" he asked.

Mr Sangma added, "Are they trying to use the other parties as their pond? Is this the strategy that BJP is adopting with other parties who are in the present dispensation, including the NPP."

Megalaya goes to polls on Monday and the counting of votes will take place on March 2.

The Election Commission of India declared that no campaigning is allowed from 4 pm tomorrow. Over 21 lakh people will be eligible to elect their representatives from 369 candidates including 36 women.

"Regrettable": India Slams Pak Over Jammu And Kashmir Reference In UN

India slammed Pakistan after it referred to Jammu and Kashmir during a special session on Ukraine in the UN General Assembly, terming the provocation as “regrettable and misplaced” and calling out Islamabad's track record of harbouring and providing safe havens to terrorists with impunity.

“I'm taking the floor today to say that India chooses this time not to respond to Pakistan's mischievious provocations. Our advice to the delegate of Pakistan is to refer to our numerous Rights of Reply that we have exercised in the past,” Counsellor in India's Permanent Mission to the UN Pratik Mathur said.

Mr Mathur exercised India's Right of Reply on Thursday after Pakistan's envoy at the UN Munir Akram referred to Jammu and Kashmir while delivering the explanation of vote on the UN General Assembly resolution on Ukraine during the Emergency Special Session.

"Pakistan has only to look at itself and its own track record as a state that harbours and provides safe havens to terrorists and does so with impunity. Such uncalled for provocation is particularly regrettable and certainly misplaced at a time when after two days of intense discussions, we have all agreed that the path of peace can be the only path forward to resolve conflict and discord,” Mr Mathur said.

Court Flags UP Police Operations In Delhi Without Local Cops' Knowledge

The Delhi High Court on Thursday expressed its displeasure over the operations of police of other States in the national capital without informing the local police.

The High Court said it is necessary to obviate the repeated incidents where police from other states come to Delhi and conduct their operations here without informing the Delhi police.

The High court was hearing a plea of a newly wedded couple who sought protection from the family of the girl. The couple was taken away from Delhi to Modi Nagar by the UP police.

Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani also perused the CCTV footage in and around the premises where the couple has been residing in Delhi to ascertain the identity of UP cops who conducted the operation.

After perusing the CCTV footage, the bench said the faces of those who conducted the operation were not visible to the bare eye. The footage appears to be "truncated", it added.

"I propose to take it further as far as I can take it. These things sometimes come as roadblocks. But this footage is incomplete. It is truncated," Justice Bhambhani said.

The bench was informed by the counsel for the couple that a similar incident also took place in October 2021. The high court had taken a very serious view and said that it won't go in Delhi, it is not UP.

After hearing the submission justice Bhambhani observed, "Evidently, history keeps repeating itself. It is necessary to delve deeper into the matter to obviate the repetition of episodes such as this of police from outside states coming into Delhi and conducting operations without intimating the local police."

The bench also issued a notice to the Deputy Commissioner of Police of CyPAD (Cyber Prevention Awareness Detection), Special Cell of Delhi Police. The high court asked him to examine the CCTV footage to obtain facial shots of persons in the video and to remain present in the court or be represented on the next date of hearing.

The matter has been listed on March 9.

The Delhi High on February 18, took a serious view of a midnight operation allegedly done by the UP police and taking away a young couple to Ghaziabad last week without informing Delhi police.

The High court called for CCTV footage in order to identify the cops who were part of the UP police team.

This incident pertains to the night of February 16 in the Anand Parbat area of Delhi. The couple was granted protection by the High court.

Justice Bhambhani on February 18 directed a sub-inspector of Delhi police to collect the CCTV footage in and around the premises of the couple. The court directed to produce the footage in the court.

"Let the footage collected be placed on record, " Justice Bhambhani directed.

This matter pertains to a young couple who approached the high court seeking protection from the family of the girl who lives in Modinagar.

The couple had solemnised their marriage in an Arya Samaj Temple on February 13 in Delhi. The age of girl is 19 years whereas the boy is 21.

While hearing their plea on February 16, the high court directed the SHO of police Station Anand Parbat to ensure the safety and security of the couple. He was directed to provide his and the concerned beat Constable's number.

However, on the same night, the couple was detained and taken away to a police station in Modi Nagar where the boy was made to spend the whole night in the lock-up.

The next day the girl was taken to the court and the police got her statement recorded there. Thereafter, they were allowed to leave. The couple joined the proceedings and informed the court.

They also said that they called the SHO on the night of February 16 but the calls went unanswered.

Delhi police also filed a status report stating that no information was received at the police station about the arrival and departure of UP police on the night of February 16.

The high court directed the couple to remain present in the court on Thursday.

Netflix Slashes Prices In Some Countries To Boost Subscriptions

Netflix Inc said on Thursday it had reduced the prices of its subscription plans in some countries, as the streaming giant looks to retain subscriber growth amid stiff competition from rivals.

With the pandemic-fueled boom cooling and consumers turning more cautious about spending, competition in the streaming businesses has heightened, pushing the companies to rethink their strategies.

According to the Wall Street Journal, which reported the Netflix news first earlier in the day, the price cuts span across some Middle Eastern countries, sub-Saharan African markets and parts of Latin America and Asia.

The cuts apply to certain tiers of Netflix in those markets and in some cases halving the cost of a subscription, the Journal reported.

Netflix, which operates in over 190 countries, has been looking to grow share in newer international regions as the US and Canada markets saturate. Earlier this month, it laid out plans to crack down on password sharing for accounts on its streaming platform.

"We're always exploring ways to improve our members' experience. We can confirm that we are updating the pricing of our plans in certain countries," a spokesperson for the company said.

The spokesperson did not give further details about the price cuts.

"Congress Was Special Purpose Vehicle For Independence Movement": Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah today said the Congress party was a "Special Purpose Vehicle" for independence movement, without any ideology, whereas the BJP was formed on the basis of an ideological pillar called "cultural nationalism".

India's story has begun and by 2047 creation of a "great India" is certain, he said, as he credited the people for a "paradigm shift" in the country, by bringing in the Narendra Modi led BJP government.

Mr Shah was speaking at an interactive session on "Indian Polity - 65 years Scenario & Paradigm Shift Under Modi Ji" organised by 'Samvada' here.

Noting that Congress which contributed in a big way for the freedom struggle is today completely "fallen" into the dynastic system, and its internal democracy has fully eroded, the Union Minister said, Socialist parties too after Lohia era gradually turned into caste based party initially, and then went on to become dynastic parties.

Dubbing the RJD and Samajwadi Party as 'dynastic,' he said, "here too in Karnataka JD(S) is a dynastic party, you can't find anyone in their family who doesn't contest polls, everyone wants contest polls and lead Karnataka, I don't understand as to who runs the house. I'm not opposing them. I'm placing the facts before you." Communist's thinking about the economy is "unnatural and narrow", and this has gradually caused their end globally, he further said, "whereas the Jana Sangh had to fight a long struggle to become Janata Party first and the BJP, but we have kept our ideology and party democracy intact."

According to him, the Congress party was not born with any ideology, but it was an organisation, to which educated Indians gradually started getting associated with, with a demand for freedom.

"No one can take away Congress' great contribution in getting freedom for the country, but it did not have an ideology."

"Congress never had one thinking or ideology, whether it is cultural ideology or economic ideology or ideology with respect to building the nation. All those who wanted freedom got associated with the Congress thinking it to be a platform," he said.

"If I have to say in the modern educated Bengaluru's language, the Congress party was a Special Purpose Vehicle for independence. Congress friends should not take my words in a wrong sense, I'm just trying to explain in a simple way....the only intention was to make the country rid of the British, the whole country was with them on this," he said.

Suggesting that this was the reason why Gandhiji had called for the disbanding of Congress party, after independence as its work was over, the former BJP President said that Gandhi had asked people to form their own party based on their ideology and had said that people will choose their leader.

"But, this did not happen as the credit of getting freedom was in the Congress' account and its leaders then did not want to leave it," he said.

Averring that the ideology of BJP was "cultural nationalism", Mr Shah said, other than India, rest are geopolitical countries, created after war or inventions or partitions, while ours is a "geo-cultural country" formed out of a common cultural ecosystem, and our party fully believes in it.

He said BJP also believes in "integral humanism", and that the deprived and poor have the first right on development, irrespective of their caste or religion, unlike former PM Manmohan Singh, who said minorities should have first right.

Today BJP is the world's largest party with more than 11 crore workers, more than 1,500 legislators, more than 400 MPs and has a government on over 66 per cent land area of this country, he said adding that "as there was courage in our policies or ideology we have reached this far."

Chief Minister Basavaraj was also present in the event, which was attended by select invitees from various walks of life.

Pointing out that corruption, inflation, crony capitalism, and policy paralysis had engulfed the country before 2014, Mr Shah said, after Narendra Modi became Prime Minister politics was taken away from the privileged towards those potential, and the concept of power for potential was created, bringing in a "paradigm shift".

BJP freed India from, casteism, dynastic and appeasement which had destroyed the country and its policies, he said, as he defended the government's strong decisions like GST, demonitisation, fight against corruption, stating that it was for the good of the people, despite resistance within and the threat of losing the vote bank looming large.

Listing out various policies, initiatives and programmes of the Modi led government for the welfare of the people and in national interest, the Home Minister also pointed to the growth in India's stature globally, and as fifth largest economy.

He spoke about the Modi government's zero tolerance towards terrorism, and also sought to clarify BJP's position on regional languages stating that "Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, are all our languages."

Pitching for education in mother tongue, he said, "language is not proof for our IQ or knowledge, it is only the expression of IQ or knowledge."

Advising people to always vote looking at a party and its leadership, Shah said, leadership is not an individual, he is an institution who is associated with the legacy, ideology and development programmes of the party.

AI Indispensable But Has Significant Potential For Bias, Cautions Auditor

Extolling the virtues and the indispensability of artificial intelligence (AI)-based applications, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) on Wednesday said that the "most significant risk associated with AI implementation in the public sector is the potential for bias."

Addressing a seminar themed "AI and Data Analytics" on Wednesday, the national auditor Girish Chandra Murmu said in his address: "AI technologies while being exciting also bring a certain degree of risk with them. The most significant risk associated with AI implementation in the public sector is the potential for bias."

He said, AI algorithms learn and improve themselves through identifying pattern in training data and the entire algorithm would be vulnerable to similar bias. "Another risk of AI implementation in the public sector is privacy concerns for the individuals."

While the indispensability for AI to detect malicious cyber activities, identifying potential threats and in responding to them in the forseeable future is bound to increase, AI is also being used by cyber criminals to create more advanced attacks against security infrastructure and solutions, he said.

"That is why AI is always to be hyphenated with 'responsible' i.e., it should work for overall betterment of society, environment and not just for humankind but for the entire planet," Mr Murmu added.

Explaining that India is the home to third largest and fastest growing AI ecosystem in the world, Alkesh Kumar Sharma, secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, said in his speech, "In this era of digital transformation, role of AI technologies becomes crucial in bringing accountability and transparency in delivery of public services."

Mr Sharma added how the government is moving towards evidence-based

Twitter, Google To Give Information On Curbing Child Abuse: Australia

An Australian regulator has sent legal letters to Twitter and Google telling them to hand over information about their efforts to stop online child abuse, drawing them into a crackdown that has already put pressure on other global tech firms.

The action by the country's e-safety commissioner keeps a spotlight on the anti-exploitation practices at Twitter under the ownership of billionaire Elon Musk, who called child protection his top priority while also laying off more than half its employees since taking over last October.

"With Elon Musk declaring child sexual abuse a top priority, this is an opportunity for him to explain what he is indeed doing," e-safety commissioner Julie Inman Grant told Reuters in an interview, referring to several of Musk's tweets.

She said it was in Twitter's interests to show that it was acting effectively to eradicate child sexual abuse material, otherwise advertisers could turn away from the company.

Inman Grant, who had served as a public policy director for Twitter until 2016, said the responses of larger tech firms, coupled with reports of looser content moderation at Twitter since Mr Musk took over, prompted her to take action.

Twitter closed its Australian office after Elon Musk's buyout so there was no local representative to respond to Reuters, and a request for comment sent to the San Francisco-based company's media email address was not immediately answered.

Apart from writing to Twitter, the commissioner also sent letters to Alphabet Inc's Google, owner of YouTube and the file storage unit Google Drive, and China's TikTok.

Google's senior manager of government affairs and public policy Samantha Yorke said abuse material had no place on the company's platforms and "we utilise a range of industry standard scanning techniques including hash-matching technology and artificial intelligence to identify and remove (child abuse material) that has been uploaded to our services".

TikTok's policy manager for Australia Jed Horner said in a statement the company had a zero-tolerance approach to dissemination of abuse material with more than 40,000 safety professionals globally "who develop and enforce our policies, and build processes and technologies to detect, remove or restrict violative content at scale".

Under new laws in Australia, the e-safety commissioner, an office set up to protect internet users, can compel internet companies to give detailed information about the frequency of child exploitation on their platforms and about measures they take to stamp it out.

Companies that fail to cooperate face fines of up to A$700,000 ($478,000) per day.

Last year, the commissioner sent similar notices to Apple Inc, Microsoft Corp and Facebook owner Meta Platforms. After receiving their responses, the commissioner called their practices inadequate.

Inman Grant said a 2020 joint investigation with the Canadian Centre for Child Protection found widespread publicly-available abuse material on Twitter, which those authorities reported to Twitter's head of trust and safety.

"When you compound that with Elon Musk coming here, eviscerating the trust and safety team, but also cutting the local public policy externally-facing folks, and then allowing some of the worst of the worst actors back on, you're going to have a lot of bad actors, fewer guardrails," she said, commenting on the job cuts at Twitter.

Although Twitter had effectively closed its Australian unit, Inman Grant said her office had extra-territorial powers to fine companies abroad, but she hoped the public attention would prompt Twitter to cooperate.

Man Kidnapped, Killed Minor, Body Recovered Weeks Later: Delhi Cops

A 21-year-old man was arrested for allegedly kidnapping and murdering an adolescent girl, whose decomposed body was recovered recently by police, an official said on Wednesday.

The incident took place in west Delhi's Nangloi area.

The accused has been arrested, they said, adding that the post-mortem report will confirm sexual assault.

A case of kidnapping was registered in Nangloi police station under section 363 (punishment for kidnapping) of the IPC on February 10 on the statement of the 11-year-old's mother, a senior police officer said.

According to the woman, her daughter had gone to school on February 9 and did not return after that, officer said.

After registering the case, an investigation was taken up.

During investigation, raids were conducted in Punjab and Madhya Pradesh. Accused Rohit alias Vinod, a resident of Dairywala Bagh, Paschim Vihar, was nabbed on Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer) Harendra Kumar Singh said.

The accused disclosed that he met the girl on February 9. After befriending her, he took her to a secluded place in the Ghewra area where he killed her and left, the DCP said.

He took the police team to the spot where the decomposed body of the minor was recovered. The crime and forensic science laboratory (FSL) teams were called and the body was sent to the mortuary, police said.

On Wednesday, an autopsy was conducted and the body was handed over to the family for last rites. The accused has been taken on police remand for further investigation, they said, adding that the section of murder has been added to the case.

The motive of the killing is being ascertained. The autopsy report will confirm any sexual assault, police added.

According to sources, the initial investigation has revealed that the victim did not go to school on February 9. The accused found her alone at a park where he approached her.

They both walked together for four to five kilometres along a railway track. Her body was recovered from a secluded area near the track. The accused was familiar with the area as he used to take the same route when he worked in a factory earlier, sources said.

The family members of the deceased identified the body through her school bag. The previous involvement, if any, of the accused is being checked, they added.

"Put Family Facing Eviction In Taj Hotel": Bombay High Court In Jest

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday pulled up the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority for seeking to evict a man and his family from their transit tenement and in a lighter vein said the planning body should put them up at the Taj hotel in south Mumbai.

A division bench of Justices Gautam Patel and Neela Gokhale questioned the 48-hour eviction notice sent to the man, whose original home was pulled down for a public project, and asked if MMRDA expected him to “stand at Flora Fountain (a Mumbai landmark) and beg”.

The court was hearing a petition filed by one Shobhnath Singh challenging MMRDA's notice of February 8, 2023, that asked him to vacate the tenement within 48 hours failing which he and his family would be forcibly removed.

The petitioner submitted that he did not have an alternative accommodation and that the threat of forcible dispossession was unreasonable.

The bench asked MMRDA how they could give such a short notice to the petitioner without providing an alternative accommodation.

“The petitioner and his family are already dispossessed from their original flat and have been living in this transit home. Now you (MMRDA) want him out of the transit home too?” Justice Patel said.

The court held that pending hearing of the petition, interim protection ought to be given to the petitioner.

“If you (MMRDA) oppose this then I will direct you to put him (petitioner) and his family up at the Taj hotel,” Justice Patel said in a lighter vein.

The bench was informed by the petitioner's lawyer that the MMRDA had locked the tenement. The court directed the MMRDA to remove the lock immediately and posted the matter for hearing on March 10.

As per the plea, the petitioner's original house in suburban Kanjurmarg was demolished for a public project.

He and his family have been put up in a transit tenement in the same area since 2017.

Advocate Aparna Patkar, who represented MMRDA, told the court that the transit tenement was to be granted to other project-affected persons and hence the notice of eviction was issued.

Delhi Mayor Election Today After AAP's Big Supreme Court Win: 10 Points

  1. The elections are being held after a decisive victory for AAP in the Supreme Court. Since the civic elections in December, the Mayor elections were postponed thrice amid a prolonged tussle between the AAP and the BJP.
  2. AAP candidate Shelly Oberoi had approached the top court, questioning the BJP's contention that the aldermen -- 10 members nominated by the Lieutenant Governor -- are allowed to vote in the election.
  3. A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said nominated members cannot vote in the election. "Nominated members cannot go for election. The constitutional provision is very clear," the bench observed.
  4. After the election of the Mayor, the Deputy Mayor, and six members of the Standing Committee will be elected the same day
  5. In the election for the Standing Committee, AAP is likely to win three seats and the BJP two. The fight is over the sixth seat.
  6. If the alderman were allowed to vote, the strength of the BJP would have gone up to 123 from 113. AAP has 150 votes in the 274-member house, where the majority mark stands at 138.
  7. So while it would not have affected the outcome of Mayor election, the BJP could have bagged a critical chunk of the Standing Committee, understood to be the most powerful body in civic body. The Congress has said it would abstain, sparking allegations of "deal-making with the BJP" from AAP councillors.
  8. The electoral college for the mayor comprises 250 elected councillors, seven Lok Sabha and three Rajya Sabha MPs from Delhi and 14 MLAs. The Delhi Assembly Speaker nominated 13 AAP MLAs and a BJP member to the civic body.
  9. AAP won 134 of 250 wards in the first municipal election held after the merging of the MCD and redrawing of constituencies last year. The BJP finished second after controlling the civic body for 15 years.
  10. AAP had earlier objected to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena naming the 10 aldermen without consulting the Delhi government. Oath-taking by the 10 nominated aldermen and the question of their voting had stalled Mayor election Thrice. The election was postponed the Fourth time to accommodate the Supreme Court hearing.

"We Are Least Bothered": Nitish Kumar On Sulking Aide's Exit From Party

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday made light of the exit of Upendra Kushwaha from his JD(U) with the assertion that he was "least bothered".

The JD(U) supremo recalled the reservations people in his party had with regard to the former Union minister's induction in 2021 and wondered "why he came back in first place".

"I had to put my foot down to facilitate his return. He had been saying that he wanted to spend his entire life in the party. I wonder what went wrong of late... But now that he has left, it is fine. We are least bothered," said mr Kumar.

Mr Kushwaha had returned to the JD(U), merging his Rashtriya Lok Samata Party, and was immediately rewarded with the designation of the JD(U) parliamentary board chief, besides membership of the legislative council which he has expressed the willingness to give up.

The veteran leader had on Monday quit the JD(U), and announced the formation of a new outfit, ‘Rashtriya Loktantrik Janata Dal'.

Mr Kumar, who was responding to questions from journalists, Mr as also asked about Kushwaha having said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi faced “no challenge in 2024” and met BJP leaders here including state unit president Sanjay Jaiswal.

"You can very well draw your conclusions," said Mr Kumar with a wry smile.

Meanwhile, Mr Kushwaha, who had formerly been an NDA ally as the RLSP chief and served in the first Narendra Modi administration, bitterly recalled that he was called a "BJP agent" while still in the JD(U).

He also said Jaiswal, with whom his spats in the run up to JD(U)'s break up with BJP made headlines, was a "vyaktigat mitra" (personal friend) who had come to his residence to "congratulate" him.

Jamas Jaiswal said, "I am impressed by Kushwaha's bold move. He has announced that he will give up his legislative council seat. Few people have the courage to sacrifice perks for their convictions and principles." Neither leader divulged much on the possibility of Kushwaha's formal realignment with the BJP.

However, Kushwaha, who has taken exception to Nitish Kumar declaring his deputy Tejashwi Yadav as the future leader of the 'Mahagathbandhan', mocked at the cryptic statement of JD(U) president Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan on the issue.

Mr Lalan has said in Delhi that "though Kumar maintained that the next elections would be fought under Tejashwi's leadership, it is the elected members of assembly who choose the CM and hence it is premature to say anything”.

Mr Kushwaha, responding to statement, said, "This shows the disarray in JD(U) wherein the national president sings a tune different from that of the supreme leader. The party, indeed is in shambles."

Tamil Nadu Army Jawan's Killing A Matter Of "Serious Concern": Raj Bhavan

A group of ex-servicemen on Tuesday called on Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi over the killing of an Army jawan, allegedly by a DMK Councillor and shared their anguish with him, the Raj Bhavan said.

They also flagged the "lukewarm response" of the state law enforcement to the issue, the Governor's office said in a tweet, "Some Ex-Servicemen met Governor and shared their collective anguish at the gruesome killing of M Prabhu, a serving soldier by an armed gang led by a DMK councillor and lukewarm response of the state law enforcement, " a tweet on the official Twitter handle of the Raj Bhavan said.

"Indeed, it is a matter of serious concern," it added. Mr Prabhu, who was severely thrashed by a DMK functionary and his accomplices, died last week and six people have been arrested in connection with the crime.

"BJP Cheated People On Naga Political Issue": Congress Chief At Poll Rally

Accusing the BJP-led central government of cheating the people of Nagaland on the Naga political problem, the Congress today asserted that given a chance, it will fulfil the aspirations of the citizens of the northeastern state.

Solving the decades-old Naga issue is one of the top-most commitments in the Congress' manifesto, party president Mallikarjun Kharge said at an election rally here.

"The Narendra Modi government does not have the political will to put into effect the agreed solutions to the Naga political issue and has cheated the people of Nagaland and the country as well," he said.

Stating that civil society organisations have been demanding the implementation of political solutions, Mr Kharge claimed that the state government is indulging in delaying tactics on the pretext that more talks are needed.

"Prime Minister Modi announced on August 3, 2015, that the Naga issue has been resolved with the signing of the Naga Accord which was later renamed as Framework Agreement with the NSCN-IM. But nearly eight years down the line, this has become an empty boast," he said.

To find a solution to the decades-old problem, the Centre has been holding separate negotiations with NSCN-IM since 1997 and the Working Committee of Naga National Political Group (NNPG), comprising at least seven groups, since 2017.

The Modi government inked a Framework Agreement with NSCN-IM in 2015 and Agreed Position with NNPGs in 2017. However, the final solution is yet to be attained with NSCN-IM remaining adamant on its demand for a separate flag and constitution for the Nagas.

While releasing the BJP manifesto for the Nagaland election on February 14, party president J P Nadda asserted that the solution to the Naga political issue is in the final stage as the Narendra Modi government is tirelessly working on it. However, the manifesto has no mention of it.

Claiming that the Congress is the only party that had initiated the process to find a solution to the Naga political issue, Mr Kharge said, "Even now, this is one of the top-most commitments in our election manifesto".

Without naming the Eastern Nagaland People's Organisation (ENPO), which has been demanding a separate state comprising six districts of the state, the veteran Congress leader claimed that the BJP is bent on creating a division in Nagaland.

Abrogating Article 371A of the Constitution which gives special provision to Nagaland will pave the way for "easy implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, which is the mainstay of the divisive agenda of the BJP", he alleged.

"The BJP's politics is aimed at destroying the indigenous and unique culture of Nagas," he alleged.

If voted to power, the Congress will implement measures for the development of the Eastern Nagaland region, Mr Kharge said.

The region will get its own mini secretariat and directorate of school education, the Department of Under Developed Areas will be relocated to Tuensang while dialogue between the governments of India and Myanmar will be initiated, he said.

A section of the citizens of Myanmar are Nagas.

"Given an opportunity, the Congress will fulfil the aspirations of the people of the state," he said at the rally.

The assembly election will be held on February 27 and votes will be counted on March 2.
