Bridge In Bihar's Thakurganj Sinks, Sixth In 10 Days

Another bridge in Bihar went out of commission today, making it the sixth  in 10 days. The bridge in Thakurganj block sunk by a feet today the water level of the Bund river increased following heavy rains. The surface of the bridge cracked, making it too risky to use.

The bridge, located in Khoshi Dangi village of Patharia panchayat, was built in 2007-2008 from the MP fund of the then MP Md Tasleemuddin of Thakurganj. But today, it could not withstand the pressure of water.

This bridge connects areas under three to four panchayats and if it collapses completely, it would affect around 60,000 people.

Yesterday, an under-construction bridge in Madhubani region collapsed. Work on the bridge, built at a cost of Rs 3 crore by the Rural Works Department of the Bihar government, has been on since 2021.

Before that, bridge collapses were reported from Araria, Siwan, East Champaran and Kishanganj.

On Thursday last week, a bridge caved in at Kishanganj district. Before that, a bridge under construction collapsed in East Champaran district on June 23. On June 22, a bridge, built over the Gandak canal, collapsed in Siwan.

The first case was reported on June 19, when a portion of an under-construction bridge collapsed in Araria district.

The frequent collapses have triggered conspiracy theories. "Why have bridges started to collapse only after the Lok Sabha elections?" questioned Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi.

"Why were such incidents not taking place 15 or 30 days before? Why have bridges started to collapse only after the Lok Sabha elections? Why are they collapsing now? Is there any conspiracy to defame the state government?" he added.

Sex Crimes Accused Prajwal Revanna Sent To Judicial Custody Till July 8

A court in Bengaluru on Saturday remanded former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna, who is facing charges of rape and sexual abuse of several women, to judicial custody till July 8.

He was produced before the 42nd Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court judge after his four-day Special Investigation Team (SIT) custody ended today.

On Monday, Prajwal Revanna was remanded to judicial custody till July 8. But, he was later sent to SIT custody till June 29 by the Magistrate court judge, after the police sought a body warrant through the Special Public Prosecutor (SPP).

Four separate cases have been registered against the 33-year-old grandson of the former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, all of which are being investigated by the SIT.

Prajwal had failed in his bid to retain the Hassan constituency in the recently concluded LS polls.

The cases of sexual abuse came to light after pen-drives containing explicit videos allegedly involving Prajwal Revanna were reportedly circulated in Hassan, ahead of Lok Sabha polls there on April 26.

JD(S) suspended him from the party following registration of cases against him.

Preparing To Hold Next India-Russia Summit, Will Share Dates Soon: Centre

The preparations for the next India-Russia summit are underway, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday.

"We have a very well established arrangement of bilateral summits with the Russian Federation. Twenty-one such meetings have happened so far," external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.

"We are preparing to hold the next summit. We will share the dates with you as soon as we can," he said.

Mr Jaiswal's comments at a media briefing came days after a Kremlin official in Moscow said active preparations are underway for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Russia.

"I can confirm that we are preparing a visit by the prime minister of India. We cannot (say) the dates as yet, because the dates are announced by the parties in agreement," Yuri Ushakov, an assistant to the Russian president, said on Tuesday.

"But we are actively preparing. I will emphasise once again, this visit will take place," he told reporters, replying to a question.

Diplomatic sources said the Indian prime minister's day-long visit is being planned around July 8, adding there is no finality on the date yet various options are being explored.

The annual summit between the prime minister of India and the president of Russia is the highest institutional dialogue mechanism in the strategic partnership between the two countries.

The annual summits are held alternatively in India and Russia.

The last summit was held on December 6, 2021, in New Delhi. President Vladimir Putin had visited India to attend the summit.

The summit saw both sides sealing 28 MoUs and agreements besides coming out with a joint statement titled "India-Russia Partnership for Peace, Progress and Prosperity".

Mr Modi and Putin last held bilateral talks on the margins of a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) at Samarkand in Uzbekistan on September 16, 2022.

In the meeting, Mr Modi had famously pressed Putin to end the conflict in Ukraine saying "today's era is not of war".

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Modi has held several telephonic conversations with Putin and Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

In reflection of its strong friendship with Russia, India has not yet condemned Moscow's invasion of Ukraine and it has been maintaining that the crisis must be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue.

India's import of Russian crude oil has also gone up significantly notwithstanding the G7 price cap and increasing disquiet over the procurement in many Western countries.

In December 2022, the G7 grouping and its allies announced a cap on the price of Russian oil as part of a series of punitive measures against Moscow in view of its invasion of Ukraine. The price cap restricts countries to pay more than USD 60 a barrel.

Russia has been a longstanding and time-tested partner for India. Development of India-Russia relations has been a key pillar of India's foreign policy.

Eknath Shinde Takes A Swipe At Uddhav Thackeray Over 'Farewell' Remark

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday took a swipe at Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray for his statement that the monsoon session beginning June 27 will be the farewell session of the MahaYuti government.

"Shouldn't he (Uddhav Thackeray) be in the House to give a farewell? Or will he say goodbye from a Facebook Live? The people will decide whether to bid a farewell," Shinde said, asserting that those sitting in the government are connected to the people and have done a slew of works for their betterment.

The obvious reference was Uddhav Thackeray's regular use of Facebook Live during the Maha Vikas Aghadi government's tenure, instead of coming to the Mantralaya.

Shinde, who chaired the state Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, also criticised the opposition for its move to boycott the customary tea meeting convened by him on the eve of the monsoon session.

"This is the last session of the present state Assembly. So we thought that the opposition would come and discuss a range of issues during the tea meeting. However, they gave a letter mentioning the same issues, which the government will reply to in the House. The opposition is confused," claimed Shinde.

"The opposition may have got momentary happiness after the Lok Sabha elections, but despite all the attacks, Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister for the third time," the Chief Minister said, as he reiterated that the opposition spread a fake narrative that changes will be made in the Constitution and reservation policies.

‘'Despite spreading such fake narratives, Congress got only 99 seats and the party will need another 25 years to win 240 seats," he said.

"The Shiv Sena and the Uddhav Thackeray camp were pitted against each other in 13 seats, of which we won seven seats. Of the total 19 per cent votes, bow & arrow (Sena symbol) got 14.50 per cent. So what did the Thackeray cam get," Shinde asked.

Officer Suspended For Allowing Mumbai Hoarding Without Top Cop Approval

Maharashtra Government on Tuesday suspended IPS officer Quaiser Khalid for allowing a giant hoarding - whose collapse last month claimed 17 lives – without the approval of the DGP office.

The 140x120 ft hoarding in Mumbai's Ghatkopar area collapsed on May 13 during gusty winds and unseasonal rains.

A notification issued by the state Home Department on Friday said the IPS officer, as the then Government Railway Police (GRP) commissioner, permitted the erection of the hoarding without obtaining mandatory permission from the office of Maharashtra Director General of Police (DGP).

Mr Khalid committed administrative lapses and irregularities in sanctioning the hoarding on his own, the notification said. The hoarding size also deviated from the approved norms, it added.

The suspension comes amid reports of Mumbai police probing a series of money transactions allegedly linking the company that owned the hoarding, and a business associate of the wife of the IPS officer.

“A preliminary inquiry has been conducted regarding the collapse of the hoarding, erected on Railway Police land,” the notification said.

A report was submitted by the Director General of Police, Maharashtra State has clearly mentioned the gross irregularities and administrative lapses in sanctioning the hoarding that collapsed on May 13, it said.

“The Government of Maharashtra has decided to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Md. Quaiser Khalid, IPS (MH 1997), Additional Director General of PCR, Maharashtra State in respect of administrative lapses and irregularities in sanctioning the hoarding, on his own, without approval of the DGP office and in respect of the misuse of powers by allowing the massive hoarding size of 120 X 140 ft deviating from the approved norms,” it said.

Mr Khalid was being placed under suspension in accordance with the Provision of Rule 3 (1) of the All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1969 with immediate effect, it said.

During the suspension period, Mr Khalid shall be paid subsistence allowance, dearness allowance and other allowances as admissible under Rule 4 of All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1969, on production of a certificate that he is not engaged in any other employment, business, profession or vocation, it said.

The notification said that during the period of suspension, Khalid shall not leave station without obtaining the permission of the Director General of Police, adding he won't be allowed to accept any private employment or engage in any other trade or business during the period of suspension.

Sanskrit, Dogri, Odia: Linguistic Diversity At Lok Sabha Oath Ceremony

The Lok Sabha witnessed a display of linguistic diversity on Monday, with the newly-elected MPs taking their oaths in English and Indian languages, including Sanskrit, Hindi, Dogri, Bengali, Assamese, Gujarati and Odia.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took his oath in Hindi amid slogans of "Jai Shri Ram" from the treasury benches.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Women and Child Development Minister Annapurna Devi, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Urban Development Minister ML Khattar were among those who took oath in Hindi.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the MP from Odisha's Sambalpur, took oath in Odia.

As Pradhan proceeded to take his oath, members of the opposition raised "NEET, NEET" slogans, amid a controversy over alleged irregularities in competitive exams, including the medical entrance exam National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG).

Suresh Gopi, the first BJP MP to be elected from Kerala, also took oath as a member of the 18th Lok Sabha.

Before taking his oath in Malayalam, the actor-politician invoked the gods, saying "Krishna, Guruvayurappa".

Suresh Gopi is the Minister of State (MoS) for Tourism and Petroleum. He represents Kerala's Thrissur constituency.

Shripad Yesso Naik, the MoS for Power and Renewable Energy, took his oath in Sanskrit. Naik won a sixth term from the North Goa constituency.

First-time MP and former Union minister Sushma Swaraj's daughter Bansuri Swaraj also took oath in Sanskrit, alongside BJP MPs Devusinh Chauhan (Kheda in Gujarat), Hemang Joshi (Vadodara in Gujarat), and Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri (Uttar Kannada in Karnataka) and the Congress' MP from Sonipat in Haryana Satpal Brahamchari.

MoS for Education and Development of North Eastern Region Sukanta Majumdar took his oath in Bengali.

Pune MP Muralidhar Mohol, the MoS for Aviation, took his oath in Marathi.

Union Minister Jitender Singh, the MP from Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur, took his oath in Dogri.

Union Minister of Port and Shipping Sarbananda Sonowal and Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu took their oaths in Assamese and Telugu, respectively.

Sarbananda Sonowal is the MP from Assam's Dibrugarh while Naidu is a three-time MP from Andhra Pradesh's Srikakulam constituency. He is also the youngest minister in the third Modi government.

Steel and Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy and Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi took their oaths in Kannada while Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy took his oath in Telugu.

The Congress' KA Satish Jarikholi (Chikkodi in Karnataka) and BJP MPs Jagadish Shettar (Belgaum in Karnataka) and PC Gaddigoudar (Bagalkot in Karnataka) took their oaths in Kannada.

BJP MPs from Gujarat Bharatbhai Sutariya (Amreli), Mitesh Rameshbhai Patel (Anand) and Mukeshkumar Chandrakant Dalal (Surat) took their oaths in Gujarati.

However, BJP MP from Saran in Bihar Rajiv Pratap Rudy rued that he could not take his oath in Bhojpuri.

"Everyone is taking oath in their own languages and it feels so good ... It would have been even better if we could have taken oath in Bhojpuri," Mr Rudy said, addressing the Chair.

"I will read my oath," he said and proceeded to take his oath in Hindi.

MPs can subscribe to the oath or affirmation in English or any of the 22 languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

Bhojpuri is not listed in the Eighth Schedule.

Earlier in the day, Bhartruhari Mahtab took oath as a member of the new Lower House as well pro-tem speaker at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Before the proceedings started, all members stood in silence for a few seconds to mark the solemn occasion of the first sitting of the new House.

Haryana Government Increases Reservation For OBC

Haryana Government on Sunday took multiple decisions for the benefit of the Other Backward Classes in the state.

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced these decisions.

The state government has increased the upper income limit for the creamy layer to Rs 8 lakh per year.

The reservation for backward classes has been increased from 15 percent to 27 percent in Group-A and Group-B government posts.

Creamy layer is a term used in Indian politics to refer to some members of a backward class who are highly advanced socially as well as economically and educationally.

The Government has announced that the backlog of jobs for Backward Classes A and B will be filled on priority basis, for which a special recruitment campaign will be run.

Meanwhile, on the preparations for upcoming Haryana Assembly elections, Nayab Singh Saini said, "Today, we have welcomed our Union Minister and Haryana Assembly election in-charge Dharmendra Pradhan; Haryana Assembly election co-in charge Biplab Kumar Deb and newly elected members of the parliament."

He said, "As the elections process has already set in for Haryana, because of the developmental works we had done, we will form the government in Haryana for the third consecutive term under the guidance of Prime Minister Modi Ji and with the support of our elections in charges."

He added, "We have done various works which includes providing the employment to the youths and developing Haryana in a definite manner.

Taking a jibe at Congress party and Hooda family, Saini said, "In Haryana, the father-son duo of Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Deepender Singh Hooda is busy in projecting each other. Similarly, the way Congress had projected only Rahul Gandhi as leader. This is not a political party, rather it is family."

Exuding his confidence, CM Saini asserted, "Haryana has a government of the people and the poor. The government has taken steps in the interest of the poor, farmers and women. In the coming times, BJP will form the government for the third time."

Assembly polls will be held in Haryana along with Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Jammu and Kashmir at the end of the year.

Odisha Congress Expels 5 Party Leaders Over Ink Attack On State Unit Chief

The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC), taking a tough stance over the ink attack on president Sarat Pattanayak, on Sunday expelled five party leaders for a period of six years on the charges of grave indiscipline.

The leaders who were expelled from the party include Prakash Mishra, general secretary, OPCC, Shriyasmita Panda, general secretary Odisha Pradesh Mahila Congress, Sandip Routray, secretary, NSUI, Amresh Parida, state secretary, Youth Congress and Aryan Sasmal, state secretary, NSUI.

The OPCC's Disciplinary Action Committee in a letter on Sunday mentioned that the disturbing action of throwing ink at the party's state president on June 21 by some office bearers is a "very undisciplined act" which damaged the image of the party.

"Based on TV footage, for such anti-party and indisciplinary activities, Sarat Pattanayak, President, OPCC have expelled the following congress persons for a period of 6 years," read a letter issued by Santosh Singh Saluja, Chairman of the Disciplinary Action Committee.

The party had initially accused that some miscreants carried out the misdeed at the behest of ruling Bharatiya Janata Party or some other political party.

However, the expulsion order confirmed that the ink attack on Mr Pattanayak was the handiwork of some disgruntled party workers.

It also brought to fore the internal party squabble which is a cause of concern for the Congress.

NEET-PG Test Scheduled For Tomorrow Postponed As Exam Mess Spirals

The NEET-PG scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed and fresh dates will be announced soon, the Health Ministry said in a statement today.

The government alluding to the huge row over alleged irregularities in NEET-UG and UGC-NET said it decided to "undertake a thorough assessment of the robustness of processes of NEET-PG, conducted by the National Board of Examination for medical students."

"It has accordingly been decided, as a precautionary measure, to postpone the NEET-PG scheduled to be held tomorrow (June 23). Fresh date of this examination will be notified at the earliest," the Health Ministry said, adding it "sincerely regrets the inconvenience caused to students".

The government said the decision was taken in the best interests of students and to maintain the sanctity of examination.

An hour before the announcement of the exam postponement came, the government issued an order that said it has replaced the chief of the National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the NEET-UG and UGC-NET.

Subodh Kumar Singh, who was NTA director general, has been replaced by retired Indian Administration Service (IAS) officer Pradeep Singh Kharola. The move is significant as it shows the government is cracking down on NTA officials.

With the parliament session beginning soon, the Centre is bracing to face an onslaught of questions on the controversies surrounding these key exams for entry into medical and higher education teaching positions.

Earlier in the day, the Education Ministry formed a high-level committee of experts to make recommendations on reform in the mechanism of the examination process, improvement in data security protocols, structure and functioning of the NTA.

The UGC-NET was recently cancelled just a day after the exam was conducted. Also, the NTA on Friday announced the postponement of the Joint CSIR-UGC-NET, which was scheduled for June 25-27.

Ensure Those Displaced By 'Post-Poll Violence' Return Home: Court To Bengal

The Calcutta High Court directed the West Bengal government today to take steps to ensure that people displaced in the alleged post-poll violence in the state return to their homes.

The court also extended the deployment of central forces in the state till June 26, when the matter would be listed for hearing again.

"We cannot shut our eyes to the spate of complaints as disclosed and the allegation on the role of the police administration for which we feel that the deployment of the central forces may continue for a limited period," the court observed.

A division bench presided by Justice Harish Tandon directed the West Bengal government to take immediate action to ensure that people displaced due to the alleged post-poll violence in the state return to their homes.

The court directed the police administration to ensure the safety and security of such displaced persons and keep a constant vigil in the area of their residence and ensure that no threat perception or any kind of violence takes place in such areas.

Hearing petitions regarding allegations of post-poll violence in West Bengal after the Lok Sabha elections, the division bench directed the state to take note of those complaints and take immediate action as required, including registration of the complaints or FIRs.

The court had earlier ordered the deployment of the central forces in the state till June 21.

The state's Advocate General (AG) Kishore Dutta informed the court that from June 4, when the Lok Sabha election results were declared, till June 18, a total of 859 complaints have been received through email by the Director General of Police's (DGP) office.

He stated that out of these, 204 complaints constitute cognisable offences, and FIRs have been registered based on those.

Mr Dutta said that 175 complaints relating to non-cognisable cases have been registered.

The AG stated that 219 were duplicate complaints, 26 were incomplete and 14 were under scrutiny.

Observing that serious allegations have been made about violence in the state following the elections, the court said that the question would be whether the continuation of the deployment of central forces in such a scenario is inevitable.

AG Dutta submitted that 10 to 12 or even 20 complaints a day about cognisable cases throughout the state do not depict a picture that the state police is unable to handle the situation and said that it does not warrant central forces to remain deployed in the state.

He further submitted that the central forces cannot remain deployed after the parliamentary election is over and that maintenance of public order is primarily a state subject.

He claimed that the state government has taken all possible steps to combat any incident of violence and none of the parties have been able to make out a case of dereliction on the part of the police administration in discharging their duty.

Additional Solicitor General Asok Kumar Chakrabarti, representing the central government, stated that if the court directs, it will continue the deployment of the central forces in the state.

Lawyer-petitioner Priyanka Tibrewal gave a list of people displaced from their homes and of those whose houses were looted, in an affidavit submitted before the court.

It was alleged by Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari and lawyer Priyanka Tibrewal in their separate PILs that people belonging to a particular political party were being subjected to atrocities following the conclusion of the Lok Sabha election process.

Arrested Man Gives Cops The Slip At Mumbai Airport, Then A Dramatic Chase

A 32-year-old man being taken to Goa after his arrest from Uttar Pradesh dashed out of Mumbai airport and fled despite a chase by a cop from the coastal state, police said on Thursday.

Imad Wasim Khan made the daring escape around 6 am on Wednesday after a Goa police team arrived with him at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, an official said.

Khan is an accused in a case registered at Mapusa in Goa for alleged wrongful confinement, voluntarily causing hurt, and personating a public servant, he said.

Based on inputs, Goa recently police visited Khan's hometown in UP's Saharanpur and took him into custody with the help of their local counterparts.

The two-member police team boarded a flight to Mumbai and arrived at T2 (terminal 2). As one of the cops was asking the airport staff about T1, from where they were to take a flight to Goa, Khan escaped from the clutches of the other.

The policeman gave chase, but Khan sprinted out of the airport and got into a car, according to the FIR registered at the Sahar police station here.

The cop even tried to pull Khan out but he managed to stay put inside despite a scuffle and escaped in the vehicle, the official said citing the FIR.

The two Goa policemen filed a complaint against Khan after they failed to trace him, the official said.

A case has been registered against Khan and efforts are on to track him down, the official added.

Noida-Based YouTuber Gets Karnataka Police Notice Over Rahul Gandhi Video

A Noida-based YouTuber was issued a notice today by the Karnataka Police to join its probe over a video featuring Congress MP Rahul Gandhi.

"The video, titled 'Rahul Trying Hard To Fuel Fire, Naseer Wants Modi in Skull Cap' allegedly intends to create feelings of enmity, hatred, and ill-will between communities," the police notice issued to YouTuber Ajeet Bharti read.

The action came after one BK Bopanna filed a complaint at the High Grounds Police Station in Bengaluru on June 15.

Based on his complaint, an FIR was lodged under Sections 153 (promoting enmity between different groups) and 505(2) (statements creating or promoting enmity) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the notice said.

The police directed Mr Bharti to appear before the investigating officer at the High Grounds Police Station at 11 am within seven days of receiving the notice.

The Karnataka Police team landed at the YouTuber's home in Noida's Sector 57 around 1 pm, a local police officer said.

"Our team also reached the house soon and the Karnataka Police left after serving the notice. Usually, it's a procedure that any visiting police team informs their local counterparts but that did not happen in this case," the officer said.

"Thackeray Sena Would Have Won 20-22 Lok Sabha Seats If...": Sanjay Raut

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut said his party would have won 20 to 22 Lok Sabha seats alone in Maharashtra had its name and original symbol not been "snatched away" after the 2022 coup.

The party will approach the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the July 12 biennial elections to the Maharashtra Legislative Council as MLAs of ruling coalition parties Shiv Sena and the NCP who will vote in the polls face the prospect of disqualification, he said.

Sanjay Raut dared the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to contest the assembly polls in October on a different name and symbol.

"Everything was snatched away from us. The party's name, symbol, our MLAs, and MPs. Still, we put up a fight and got nine MPs elected. If we had the name and (original) symbol of our party, Shiv Sena (UBT) would have won 20-22 Lok Sabha seats," the Rajya Sabha member maintained.

Maharashtra has 48 Lok Sabha seats, the second highest after Uttar Pradesh (80).

After the 2022 split of the party founded by Bal Thackeray in 1966, the Election Commission allotted the Shiv Sena name and the original "bow and arrow" symbol to the faction led by Eknath Shinde.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) contested the Lok Sabha polls on a new symbol - the "flaming torch" - and won nine of the 21 seats it contested in Maharashtra. The Uddhav Thackeray-led outfit is a constituent of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) along with the Congress and the NCP (SP). On the other hand, the Shinde-led Sena bagged seven seats.

Mr Raut referred to certain observations made by the Supreme Court while hearing the disqualification pleas related to MLAs of the ruling Shiv Sena and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP.

"In such circumstances when MLAs could be disqualified and the case is being heard in the Supreme Court, it will be unconstitutional for these lawmakers to elect MLCs. They (Sena and NCP MLAs) do not have any right to vote," he emphasised.

"We will mention in the Supreme Court that this (council) election is unconstitutional and illegal. Hence it must be stayed," Mr Raut said.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) approached the Supreme Court challenging the Maharashtra assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar's decision to not disqualify its rebel MLAs who sided with Eknath Shinde.

The NCP suffered a split in July 2023 when its senior leader Ajit Pawar joined the Sena-BJP government along with eight other MLAs. Ajit Pawar is now a Deputy Chief Minister.

On Wednesday, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray said no poll should be held for 11 seats of the Legislative Council, where MLAs will be voting, till the Supreme Court rules on disqualification pleas related to some members of the lower house.

Assam Flood Situation Worsens, 3 Lakh People Affected; Karimganj Worst-Hit

The flood situation in Assam worsened drastically on Wednesday as almost 3 lakh people were reeling under the deluge across 17 districts, an official bulletin said.

According to the daily flood report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 2,96,00 people are hit by the floods in Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, Cachar, Darrang, Goalpara, Hailakandi, Hojai, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur, South Salmara, Tamulpur and Udalguri districts.

Karimganj is the worst hit with almost 2.5 lakh people suffering, followed by Tamulpur with over 11,500 people affected, and Bajali with more than 5,600 people reeling under flood waters, it said.

Till Tuesday, over 1.61 lakh people were suffering in flood waters across eight districts of the state.

The total number of people losing their lives in this year's flood, landslide and storm stood at 35.

"Oh, You Defeated Me": Naveen Patnaik To BJP MLA In Odisha Assembly

BJD president and former Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday greeted newly elected first-time BJP MLA Laxman Bag, who defeated him in the recently concluded Assembly polls from Kantabanji seat in Bolangir district.

Mr Patnaik, known for his composed demeanour, was making his way through the House after taking the oath as a member of the Assembly when he came face-to-face with Mr Bag, who stood up from his seat.

"How are you?" Mr Bag inquired with folded hands.

As Mr Bag introduced himself, Patnaik responded, "Oh, you defeated me." Accompanied by Aul MLA and former minister Pratap Keshari Deb, Mr Patnaik congratulated Bag.

The entire house including Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and his deputies - KV Singh Deo and Pravati Parida - also stood up from their seats to greet Mr Patnaik in the Assembly, where he was an undisputed leader for 24 years.

The narrative of Me Patnaik's defeat was twofold. Not only had he lost his chief minister's chair, held firmly since 2000, but he also faced an unexpected defeat in Kantabanji, which he contested alongside his traditional Hinjili assembly seat.

In Hinjili, Mr Patnaik clung to victory by a slender margin of 4,636 votes.

BJP's Bag amassed 90,876 votes against Mr Patnaik's 74,532, securing the seat by 16,334 votes.

Mr Bag, 48, confessed his initial doubts about toppling a political titan like Mr Patnaik. "The voters were silent throughout the campaign, but they voted for me," he recounted, still grappling with the magnitude of his victory.

In a poignant scene, many newly elected MLAs were seen prostrating themselves before entering the Assembly building, underscoring the gravity and solemnity of the political shift that had just unfolded.

India, US Working For Training ISRO Astronauts At NASA Space Center

India and the US on Monday said they concluded the Strategic Framework for Human Spaceflight Cooperation to deepen interoperability in space and are working toward commencing advanced training for ISRO astronauts at the NASA Johnson Space Center.

A fact-sheet issued by the US and India after the iCET Dialogue between US National Security Adviser (NSA) Jake Sullivan and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval said the two sides are also exploring opportunities to participate in the Lunar Gateway Programme.

The Lunar Gateway Programme aims to build a space station around the moon as part of the collaborative Artemis programme spearheaded by the US.

The fact-sheet said the talks between the two NSAs explored opportunities for India's participation in the Lunar Gateway Programme, as well as joint avenues for collaboration in other space technologies.

The two leaders also exchanged views on securing a carrier for the first-ever joint effort between NASA and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) astronauts at the International Space Station, which will mark a significant milestone in the India-US space partnership and space exploration.

They noted the strengthening defence space cooperation through the second Advanced Domains Defense Dialogue held at the Pentagon in May that featured an India-US space table-top exercise and included bilateral expert exchanges on emerging domains including artificial intelligence.

They also noted that the space agencies of the two countries are preparing for the launch of the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar, a jointly developed satellite that will map the entirety of the Earth's surface twice every 12 days as part of efforts to combat climate change and other global challenges together.

The iCET talks also saw the launch of a new partnership between the US Space Force and the Indian startups -- 114ai and 3rdiTech -- including on advancing space situational awareness, data fusion technologies, and infra-red sensor semiconductor manufacturing.

The two sides welcomed India's observation of the US Space Command's Global Sentinel Exercise at Vandenburg Space Force Base in February and its return as a participant in the exercise in 2025.

Uttarakhand Officials Bat For "Hill Endorsement" Licences Amid Accidents

A day after 15 tourists died in a road accident in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag, officials said there is a need for greater focus on the "hill endorsement" in drivers' licences accompanied by a physical test.

Joint Transport Commissioner Sanat Singh said this check was required for all tourist vehicles, including those that are a part of the Char Dham Yatra and the Hemkund Sahib Yatra, to reduce road accidents in the hilly regions.

Many tourist vehicles come to Uttarakhand, but due to the greater volume of cars of Char Dham Yatra, checking of other vehicles is ignored, Mr Singh said.

"Now we will need to focus on tourism apart from Chardham Yatra. We will now focus on hill endorsement of driving license," the official said.

'Hill endorsement' of a driver's license is necessary for driving on mountainous roads, he said.

Earlier the state did not have the facility for physical "hill endorsement" tests. So they were offered online, Mr Singh said. Now, driving tracks for such tests have been built with one in Dehradun already operational, he said.

In online tests, the driver is shown a video, and questions are asked based on it. Applicants pass the test even though their practical knowledge or skills are not checked, Mr Singh said.

Now such tracks for physical tests have been built in Haridwar and Rishikesh as well which will be operational in a month or two, the official said.

A tempo traveller carrying tourists skidded off the Badrinath national highway in Rudraprayag district and fell into the Alaknanda river on Saturday, killing 15 and injuring 11.

Earlier on June 11, a bus fell into a ditch in Gangani in Uttarkashi district, killing three female devotees and injuring several others.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed the officials to strictly follow all prescribed protocols to reduce road accidents in the hills. He has asked the police and transport department officials to check the mechanical condition of vehicles, and strictly test the drivers before issuing licenses.

Mr Dhami also asked them to be careful in issuing green cards and take strict action against those driving at high speed, carrying more passengers than allowed, and driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to Uttarakhand government data, 1,674 accidents were reported in the state in 2022, in which 1,042 people died and 1,613 were injured. The country reported 4,61,312 road accidents with 1,68,491 deaths and 4,43,366 injuries the same year.

Row Over Parliament's Relocated Statues Continues As Prerna Sthal Opens

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge posted his reservations about the relocation of statues of key leaders of the Independence movement as the area of relocation within the parliament complex, Prerna Sthal, was inaugurated today. Pointing out that the dedicated committee for such purposes, which contains MPs from both Houses, has not been reconstituted since 2019, Mr Kharge strongly criticised the decision to relocate the statues.

"Such decisions made without any proper discussion and deliberation with relevant stakeholders are against the rules and traditions of our Parliament," read his post on X, formerly Twitter.

A political row has been simmering for weeks over the decision to shift the statues of Mahatma Gandhi, BS Ambedkar and Chhatrapati Shivaji. The statues -- moved first during the building of the new parliament -- have been relocated to a new spot towards the back of the parliament complex, which was named Prerna Sthal.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat had explained the decision in a statement, which read, "Due to their location at different places in the Parliament Complex, visitors were not able to view these statues conveniently. For this reason, all these statues are being respectfully installed in a grand Prerna Sthal in the Parliament House Complex itself."

As the decision was announced earlier this month, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, in a post on X, said, called it "atrocious". Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera alleged that the statues of Shivaji and Ambedkar were removed because Maharashtra did not vote for the BJP.. CPI's D Raja also condemned the move, calling it "arbitrary and unilateral".

The situation was emotive for the Opposition, which had held many a protest at the feet of the 16-ft tall bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi.

After the inauguration of Prerna Sthal today, Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said the spot is "motivational and inspirational and said whoever spends time here will be inspired".

"People get inspiration from such great men...I think that the Prerna Sthal will always inspire the coming generations," said Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

Kashi Vishwanath Temple In UP Introduces Virtual Reality Darshan

The devotees coming to Kashi Vishwanath Temple here in Uttar Pradesh will now get not only physical darshan, they will also get 'virtual' darshan. The temple administration has introduced 11 minutes and 50 seconds of virtual reality Darshan.

This will allow the devotees to avoid standing in a long queue in the scorching heat to get the darshan. The temple administration said that the service is now on a trial basis and will be implemented permanently after getting feedback from the devotees.

Speaking about the new initiative, Kashi Vishwanath Temple Chief Executive Officer Vishwa Bhushan Mishra said, "3D virtual reality is a new technique which has been implemented in various temples like Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar and Mata Vaishno Devi temple. The company providing 3D technology in those temples contacted Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust for the same."

"Between May 5 to June 4, a total of 363 of our employees and priests watched the movie. They gave positive feedback about the show. Thereafter, it was started for devotees and from June 4 to June 30, a total of 282 devotees watched the movie. If the devotees like it, then it will be implemented on some modalities and terms and conditions mutually beneficial and agreed upon," he added.

This initiative allows devotees to witness rare sights of Lord Shiva and participate in the five-part aarti at 'Durlabh Darshan Kendra' within just 11 minutes and 50 seconds. The initiative was inspired by Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar and Mata Vaishno Devi temples.

"It was such a good and realistic experience. I felt like I was sitting inside the temple...I got to see all the aartis," Chhavi Gupta, a devotee from Gwalior told ANI.

" It is a divine and wonderful experience...within a small time you get to know the history of Kashi Viswanath," Chandan Rupani, another devotee told ANI.

Among the twelve Jyotirlingas, Kashi Vishwanath attracts worshippers from across the globe.

Kota Teen Sets Herself On Fire After Gang-Rape; 2 Cousins Detained: Cops

An 18-year-old died of self-immolation after she was allegedly gang-raped here, police said on Friday.

The police have detained two of the victim's cousins and are on the lookout for three other accused in the case, they said.

Superintendent of Police Kota (Rural) Karan Sharma said that they received information on Friday morning that a woman was admitted to the hospital with burn injuries.

The victim's father narrated the incident to the police and said that the accused had kidnapped her daughter from their house on Thursday night and taken her to a shop. One of the accused sat outside while the rest raped the woman.

"When her uncle got up to drink water at night, he noticed that his niece was not in the house. He went outside to look for her and heard her screaming from a shop. When he tried to open the door, the other accused sitting outside, beat him up. After the commotion, the shop's door was opened, and the woman came out crying," he said.

After the incident, the woman locked herself in her room and set herself on fire. The family managed to douse the flames and rushed her to the hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries, police said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Shivam Joshi said that based on the complaint lodged by the father, a case has been registered against the accused under sections 376 (D) (gang rape), 366 (kidnapping) and 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code.

Set To Marry In A Month, Bihar Man Missing After Kuwait Inferno

A woman from Bihar has been frantically calling up her son since she heard about the fire that killed 49 people, mostly Indians, in a building in Kuwait. But she has failed to get any information about her son, who was to get married next month.

Madina Khatoon said her eldest son Kalu Khan has been living in that building, and was about to return home for the wedding.

"I spoke to him over the phone at around 11 pm on Tuesday. He told me he would come to Darbhanga on July 5 as his marriage is scheduled for next month," she told media persons.

A resident of the Naina Ghat area in Bihar's Darbhanga district, Ms Khatoon said her son has been in Kuwait for several years. According to villagers, he was working as a skilled labourer in Kuwait.

When she found out about the fire in the building where her son lived, she frantically tried to contact him.

"But he is not responding to my calls. We have no information about his whereabouts," the inconsolable mother said, adding she had no idea about what had happened to her son.

"He is my eldest son. We tried to contact the authorities. But all our efforts were in vain. We have sent his photographs to embassy officials. Now, we are waiting for an update. We are also in touch with the district administration," she said.

"I am praying that I get some good news about my son," she said.

According to the Kuwaiti authorities, the fire broke out in a building in the southern city of Mangaf, in which 49 foreign workers, including around 40 Indians, were killed, while 50 others were injured.

Swati Maliwal Assault Case Accused Approaches Delhi High Court For Bail

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's aide Bibhav Kumar has approached the Delhi High Court seeking regular bail in the case of alleged assault on AAP Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal.

The bail plea is likely to be listed for hearing before a vacation bench of the high court on June 14.

Kumar, who was sent to 14 days judicial custody on May 31, has been accused of assaulting Maliwal on May 13 at the chief minister's official residence.

A trial court in Tis Hazari had on June 7 refused to grant him bail, saying he was facing "grave and serious" charges and that there was an apprehension that he could influence witnesses.

In his plea before the high court, Kumar said the trial court failed to consider the fact that his further custody was not required as all evidence has been collected by the investigating officer and statements of witnesses have also been recorded.

"While passing the bail rejection order, the additional sessions judge failed to consider the fact that all the evidence in relation to the aforesaid FIR has been collected by the IO and has also recorded the statements of the witnesses therefore the custody of the petitioner is not required and no useful purpose shall be served by keeping the petitioner in the judicial custody," the plea said.

Kumar's first bail plea was dismissed on May 27 by another sessions court which said there appeared to be no "pre-meditation" by Maliwal in lodging the FIR and that her allegations could not be "swiped away".

Kumar was arrested on May 18.

An FIR was registered against Kumar on May 16 under various Indian Penal Code provisions, including those related to criminal intimidation, assault or criminal force on a woman with the intent to disrobe and attempt to commit culpable homicide.

"Competition Not War": Mohan Bhagwat On Election, Running Parliament

The elections are over and the focus should now shift to nation-building, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat said today, in a speech peppered with criticism about the way the campaign was conducted on both sides of the political divide.
Speaking at an RSS programme in Nagpur, Mr Bhagwat also had advice for the new government and the Opposition, indicating that the approach to both election and governance should be tweaked.

"Election is a process of building consensus. Parliament has two sides so that both aspects of any question can be considered... Every issue has two sides. If one side is addressed by one party, the Opposition party should address the other dimension, so that we reach to the right decision," Mr Bhagwat said in words that were seen as underscoring the importance of having an Opposition.

In this election, the Congress has bounced back, hiking its 2019 score from 52 to 99.  The mandate, while cutting down then BJP numbers to 240 -- way below the majority mark of 272 -- has given the Opposition 234 seats in the Lok Sabha.

Mr Bhagwat said the whys and wherefores of the mandate, which comes once every five years,  does not concern the Sangh.

"The Sangh works for refining Public Opinion in every election, did it this time also but does not get entangled in the analysis of the outcome… Why people get elected? To go to parliament, evolve a consensus on various issues.  Our tradition is of evolving consensus… This is a competition not war," he said.

But he also frowned upon negativity of election time, saying, "The way things have happened, the way both the sides have attacked below the belt, the way completely ignored the impact of campaign strategies that would lead to divisions, increasing social and mental fault-lines, and unnecessarily drew the organisations like RSS in the same. Using technology, falsehood was spread, absolute falsehood."

He also underscored the need to fast-track peace in Manipur, saying the violence needs to end on a priority basis. "Manipur has been waiting for peace for a year. Violence has to be stopped and it has to be given priority," he said. "We have made strides in many fields like economy, defence strategy, sports, culture, technology etc... That does not mean that we have overcome all the challenges," he added.

"PM Won Polls With Alliance Support": Somnath Bharti Refuses To Shave Head

Aam Aadmi Party leader Somnath Bharti, who had earlier vowed to shave his head if Narendra Modi becomes prime minister again, on Sunday refused to make good on his promise.

Mr Bharti said Mr Modi's third term was not solely his own but rather a result of consolidated efforts of allies part of the NDA.

"I stated that I would shave my head if he were elected for a third term. However, he has not won on his own, he has won the election with the support of his alliance," he told PTI on phone.

"I stand by my words. If he did not win on his own, it's not his victory. So, as I said, if he has not won independently, I will not shave my head," he said.

Mr Bharti had ahead of the results announced on social media platform X, "I will shave off my head if Mr. Modi becomes PM for the third time." Consequent to the third term of the Modi government, Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor in a post on X asked Bharti to shave his head immediately.

"We know Aam Aadmi Party leaders have no respect for their words, but this time people want Somnath Bharti to either shave his head or quit public life," Mr Kapoor said.

Narendra Modi was sworn in as prime minister on Sunday for a third term, matching Jawaharlal Nehru's record.

Jitin Prasada: A Brahmin Face From UP Returns To Centre After 10 Years

Jitin Prasada was once considered as among Rahul Gandhi's 'young Turks' and was a minister in successive Manmohan Singh governments but defected from the Congress to the BJP in 2021, where he has again established himself as a prominent Brahmin face of Uttar Pradesh.

The 50-year-old returned to the Centre on Sunday after he took oath as a member of the Council of Ministers led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

His father Jitendra Prasada was a Congress veteran whose fortunes plunged following his decision to contest against Sonia Gandhi for the post of party president in 2000.

Mr Prasada, who joined the BJP before the 2022 UP Assembly elections and was made an MLC, holds the Public Works Department (PWD) department in the Yogi Adityanath government.

He won from the Pilibhit Lok Sabha seat this time where the party replaced Varun. He defeated his nearest rival Samajwadi Party's Bhagwat Saran Gangwar by a significant margin of 1,64,935 votes.

The Prasada family had been associated with the Congress for three generations. Jitin Prasada had served as a Union minister twice in the Congress-led UPA government.

In 2001, Mr Prasada became the Indian Youth Congress general secretary. He won his first election to Lok Sabha in 2004 from the Shahjahanpur seat that his father Jitendra Prasad once represented.

In his very first tenure as an MP, he was inducted as minister of state and was one of the youngest ministers in the Manmohan Singh government. He was minister of steel during his first term (2004).

He won a second term in the 2009 polls from the Dhaurahara seat after the Shahjahnapur seat went under delimitation. He held several portfolios, including as Minister of State for Human Resource Development, during the second Manmohan Singh government.

However, he was in the political wilderness for some time after losing the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and three years later the UP Assembly elections (2017), besides facing defeat in the 2019 parliamentary polls.

After the poll debacle, Mr Prasada's decision to join the BJP was seen as a well-calculated political gambit at that time.

Before joining the BJP, he had formed the Brahmin Chetna Parishad and tried to establish himself as a Brahmin leader.

He travelled across Uttar Pradesh in 2020 and raked up issues pertaining to the Brahmin community and has also been vocal about them.

In 2021, Mr Prasada was made the incharge of the Congress campaign in West Bengal, where his party fared badly.

He had studied at the Doon School and later pursued a degree in commerce from the Shri Ram College of Commerce in Delhi University. He completed his MBA from the International Management Institute in New Delhi.

During elections, Mr Prasada's campaign focused on the work done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government in the last 10 years and often called himself a "doot" (messenger) of Modi in his election meetings.

First-time MP from Pune and BJP leader Murlidhar Mohol was inducted as a minister of state in the Narendra Modi government this evening.

The former Pune Mayor defeated Congress's Ravindra Dhangekar, who incidentally had wrested BJP bastion Kasba in a recent Assembly bypoll.

He is from the district's Mulshi tehsil and is a graduate of Kolhapur University. He also took wrestling lessons there.

Mr Mohol, who has attended RSS 'shakhas', became a Corporator for the first time in 2002 and headed the standing committee of the Pune Municipal Corporation before becoming Mayor in 2019.

He lost the Assembly polls from the Khadakwasla seat in Pune in 2009.

Not Just Pics, Prove Adultery By Evidence: Court Amid Deepfake Menace

In the era of deepfakes, photographs placed by a spouse alleging adultery by the other partner would have to be proved by way of evidence before the family court, the Delhi High Court said.

The court's observation came while dealing with a man's contention that his estranged wife was living in adultery.

The high court dismissed the man's appeal challenging a family court order directing him to pay Rs 75,000 as maintenance to his wife and minor daughter.

As the counsel for the husband drew the court's attention to certain photographs of his wife, a bench of justices Rajiv Shakdher and Amit Bansal said, "It is not clear as to whether the respondent/wife is the person in the photographs, as alluded to by the counsel for the appellant/husband."

"We may take judicial notice of the fact that we are living in the era of deepfakes and, therefore, this is an aspect that the appellant/husband, perhaps, would have to prove by way of evidence before the family court," the bench said.

Deepfake technology allows for the creation of realistic videos, audio recordings, and images that can manipulate and mislead viewers by superimposing the likeness of one person onto another, altering their words and actions, thereby presenting a false narrative or spreading misinformation.

Asked by the bench whether this averment of adultery found mention in the man's reply to his wife's plea under the Hindu Marriage Act, his counsel conceded that there was no mention of it.

The bench noted that since the petition instituted by the man for divorce is pending an adjudication, the court may give opportunity to the parties to place their evidence on record in support of their respective cases if this issue is pressed.

"Notably, this aspect, which is vehemently pressed before us, almost as a measure of desperation to wriggle out of the obligation cast in the impugned judgment, finds no mention in the impugned judgment (of family court)," the high court said.

The man's counsel claimed that this aspect was raised before the family court, But, it was ignored while rendering the judgment.

"If this was the situation, the best course open to the appellant/husband was to move an application for review before the family court. However, no such measure has been taken recourse to by the husband," it said.

The man, an architect, has challenged a family court's April 15 order, directing him to pay Rs 75,000 as monthly maintenance to his estranged wife and child.

The couple had married in 2018 and has a five-year-old daughter.

The court was told that the wife has a post-graduate degree but is currently unemployed and living with her parents since her separation.

While the woman had sought Rs 2 lakh as monthly maintenance, the family court ordered the man to pay Rs 75,000.

"Man Of Match" Rahul Gandhi Must Be Leader Of Opposition: Shashi Tharoor

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor hailed Rahul Gandhi as "the man of the match" of the Lok Sabha polls and said it would be fitting that he takes on the mantle of the Leader of Opposition in the Lower House.

In an interview with news agency PTI after his fourth-straight Lok Sabha poll win, Shashi Tharoor said the message of the mandate was that the electorate has given a "comeuppance" to the BJP's "overweening arrogance" and its "my way or the high way attitude".

"It will be a challenge for Mr (Narendra) Modi and Amit Shah who have not been used to consulting very much in running their government and I think this is going to test their ability to change their way of functioning and be more accommodative and more conciliatory within the government and also I hope with the Opposition," he said on the incoming coalition government of the NDA.

The former Union minister said this time the NDA government could prove to be a 'majboor sarkaar (helpless government)' on some issues because the parties that are part of the NDA will have to agree on everything.

"Already we have questions being raised by one party on the Agniveer scheme, saying that it needs to be reviewed and they have been supported by a second party namely the JD(U) and Chirag Paswan. Both in Andhra Pradesh and Bihar, there are leaders who have demanded special category status for their states which the BJP government had hitherto refused to grant, that will have to be re-examined," he said.

Mr Tharoor said that suddenly there will have to be a more consensual model of governance coming up.

He accused the Modi government of treating Parliament like a notice board in the last 10 years and expecting it to be a rubber stamp for all their decisions which, he said, was not viable now with a robust opposition of more than 230 MPs.

Batting for Rahul Gandhi to take on the mantle of the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Mr Tharoor said the former Congress chief was unquestionably the star of this Lok Sabha performance.

"He and Congress president (Mallikarjun) Kharge campaigned extensively throughout the country. But Mr Kharge is in the Rajya Sabha where he leads the Opposition and it would only be fitting that Rahul Gandhi does the same in the Lok Sabha. I have certainly conveyed my view both publicly and privately in that regard," he said.

"I think we have a strong number now to stand up to the government and it (Leader of Opposition) should be a leader who is undoubtedly the most popular in the party," the Congress Working Committee member said, referring to Rahul Gandhi.

Using cricketing analogies, Mr Tharoor said Mr Gandhi was "unquestionably, indeed the man of the match" of the polls and, in a number of places, the Congress "hit the ball out of the park".

"In some places, we had a tight finish. In my case, there was a super over at the end of the T20 in my constituency. Lots of cricketing analogies all over the place but as we are seeing in the World T20, there are some concerns about the pitch we had to bat on and I would say that we had no choice but to play on the pitch we were given. But it could certainly have been a far more level playing field than it was," he said.

In Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram, Shashi Tharoor beat Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar by 16,077 votes.

About the message of the 2024 mandate, Mr Tharoor said it is very clear - the Indian voter will not allow democracy to be taken for granted.

"We've seen everything from the demonetisation that was declared without the cabinet even being consulted or informed, to the stringent lockdown that came with a few hours' notice, with not even the state Chief Ministers consulted. All of which suggested to me that we are looking at an end to a kind of autocratic rule that brought discredit to our democracy, not just at home but internationally," he said, adding that is the biggest takeaway.

The government is now a coalition and the Prime Minister will have to consult alliance partners before major decisions, failing which the government may not survive, the Congress leader said.

Hailing the gains made by the Congress that improved its tally to 99 in the Lok Sabha, Mr Tharoor said it was a very good performance and the leaders were very pleased that the numbers showed up according to "what we saw on the ground".

"As for what we can improve, there is always room for improvement. Certainly, we did not expect to lose every seat in Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh. Those are areas where introspection is needed within those state units about what went wrong and headquarters will have to weigh in as well," he said.

Mr Tharoor also dismissed comparisons between Jawaharlal Nehru and PM Modi for returning to power for three consecutive terms.

"I don't think there is any comparison with Nehru particularly since he won all three elections with a clear majority of his own party and this time around the BJP did not get a majority, it had to rely on its allies which Nehru ji never had to... not quite the same story," he said.

Mr Tharoor also credited Rahul Gandhi's two Bharat Jodo Yatras and its alliance strategies for the party's performance.

BJP Leader Explains Big Factor Behind Party's Huge Win In Indore

The Congress candidate's decision to withdraw played a major role in the landslide victory of the BJP's Shankar Lalwani from the Indore Lok Sabha constituency, Madhya Pradesh minister Kailash Vijayvargiya on Wednesday.

Mr Lalwani won by 11.75 lakh votes against his nearest BSP rival, though the second-highest votes were bagged by NOTA.

Akshay Kanti Bam, the Congress candidate, pulled out of the fray on the last day of withdrawal of nominations, leaving the opposition party without any candidate in Indore and offering the BJP a near walk-over. Bam joined the BJP soon thereafter.

"I think Lalwani has won by such a big margin that no one can beat his record. The credit for this goes to Bam also. Applaud (for Bam) again," said Vijayvargiya at an official function on the occasion of World Environment Day where Bam was also present on the stage.

The minister launched the renovation of an ancient stepwell as part of the Madhya Pradesh government's 'Namami Gange' campaign here.

Jitendra Singh Scores Hat-trick From Udhampur Lok Sabha Seat

BJP leader and Union minister Jitendra Singh has won the Udhampur Lok Sabha seat for the third time, defeating Congress candidate Choudhary Lal Singh.

After maintaining a narrow lead in the early rounds of counting, Jitendra Singh emerged victorious, equalling the feat of veteran Congress leader Karan Singh, who held the seat in 1971, 1977, and 1980.

Singh, who previously won the seat in 2014 and 2019, secured 571076 votes, defeating Choudhary Lal Singh by a margin of 1,24,373 votes, the Election Commission of India website, said.

Lal Singh received 4,46,703 votes. Former minister G M Saroori, running on the Democratic Azad Party (DPAP) ticket, came third with 39599 votes. Additionally, 12938 votes were cast under the NOTA category.

According to the officials, Saroori along with nine other candidates have forfeited their security deposit for failing to secure the minimum one-sixth of the total valid votes polled in the constituency.

Amid the bursting of crackers and showering of flowers, Singh was taken in a victory procession from the counting centre in Kathua town by joyous BJP workers. He straightway went to Mukerjee Chowk and paid homage to Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerji.

Singh expressed gratitude to the people of the Udhampur-Doda constituency for the victory.

"First of all, I want to thank the people of Udhampur-Doda constituency from the core of my heart. They have given their full support and again gave me this responsibility once again," he said.

"This seat will add to the tally to make a government led by Prime Minister Modi for the third time," he said.

In 2019, Singh defeated Congress candidate Vikramaditya Singh by a margin of 353,272 votes. In 2014, he won aganst former Union minister Ghulam Nabi Azad by 60,976 votes and was subsequently appointed Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office.

Choudhary Lal Singh, who previously won the Udhampur seat on a Congress ticket in 2004 and 2009, posed a formidable challenge. A former MLA and minister in the PDP-Congress and PDP-BJP governments, Lal Singh rejoined Congress in March 2024.

The Udhampur constituency has been alternating between the Congress and the BJP.

Congress won six consecutive times from 1967, while BJP's Chaman Lal Gupta secured three successive victories before Lal Singh's two-term win in 2004 and 2009.

Jitendra Singh's victories mark a significant achievement, underscoring the BJP's stronghold in the region, BJP's J&K unit president Ravinder Raina said.

"We won both the seats of Jammu and Udhampur with a large margin as people have reposed full faith in BJP and its candidates under the leadership of Modi ji," he said.

Rajkot Fire: Probe Team Cites "Serious Negligence" By Officials, Owners

Serious negligence on the part of the operators of the TRP game zone as well as officials of Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC), city police and Roads and Buildings Department caused the devastating fire on May 25 in which 27 lives were lost, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Gujarat government to probe the tragedy said.

The operators of the TRP game zone carried out welding works for the construction of the proposed "snow park" at the site despite knowing that the construction materials were highly inflammable, the SIT said in its preliminary report, which is part of the affidavit submitted on Monday by the state government to the Gujarat High Court hearing a suo motu PIL on the matter.

The SIT also said in its report, which was submitted to the Gujarat government on May 27, that the infrastructure of the game zone was not ready to meet fire exigencies.

Instead of separate entry and exit passages, there was only one way for both entry and exit and no separate arrangement for emergency exit, the SIT report pointed out.

The government had formed the five-member SIT headed by Additional Director General of Police Subhash Trivedi and directed it to file its preliminary report within 72 hours of the incident.

"Despite knowing that the material used for the construction of the game zone is highly inflammable, without any safety precaution, welding works were going on (for the proposed snow park)," it said, adding a welding machine and used welding rod were found from the site of the incident where construction of a snow park was going on.

Burnt and semi burnt pieces of foam sheet and tyre residue were also found around the welding machine and in the debris, it said.

No water inlet connection was given to the fire inlet, and only one fire extinguisher cylinder of dry chemical powder, which was earlier being used for restaurant and kitchen, was found from the spot, the report stated.

"Outside the shade, the fuel tank of the go-kart car was found intact and the presence of fuel was also evident," it said.

The SIT also highlighted "serious negligence" on the part of police officials, who have since been suspended, in the issuance of performance license to the game zone under the Gujarat Police Act. The said officials neglected the fact that utmost care is required to be taken while granting such licenses when the place involves a congregation of a large number of people, the report added.

The police officials also did not carry out fire no-objection certificate verification, it said.

The SIT also said the RMC's town planning and fire departments were "directly connected" to the incident.

"The TRP game zone had been in operation for more than three years and also saw pucca construction. However, no action was taken against it, and it was given free hand under the pretext of temporary structure," the SIT said.

"Since this place is non-agricultural land and can be used for residential purposes, commercial activities like a game zone cannot be carried out on it," the report further said.

Despite this, the local assistant town planning officer and assistant engineer displayed serious negligence in carrying out their duties, the SIT report said.

"It is found that no inspection was carried out by the concerned local station fire office in this regard, which clearly shows the sheer negligence on the part of the station fire officer of this area," it said.

While issuing a performance licence, the police need to take the opinion of the Roads and Buildings Department to ascertain the safety of the structure in a public place where a large number of people gather, the SIT said.

However, in this case, the then deputy executive engineer and the assistant engineer neglected such aspects while granting their opinion, the SIT report pointed out.

"In case of any adverse event, emergency exit through which people can come out and the staircase from first floor to ground floor was not verified," it said.

The government has suspended seven officers from RMC, R&B and police departments on the basis of the preliminary report submitted by the seven officers.

The police have so far named 11 persons as accused in the case, including six partners of the game zone and others whose names came up during investigation.

Of these, nine have been arrested while an accused, Prakash Hiran, was found dead in the same fire.

In its affidavit to the Gujarat High Court, the state government said the game zone did not fall within the definition of "temporary structure," and, therefore, required statutorily stipulated development permission from the city civic body.

"No such development permission was sought for in the case of TRP game zone," it said.

Necessary measures have been taken on an urgent basis to mitigate the circumstances arising out of the incident and strict action has ensued against the erring officers, the state government said.

At the same time, it is awaiting the final report of the SIT "to enable the state authorities to take further action as per its findings and recommendations," it said.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar Will Defeat Shashi Tharoor In Kerala: Exit Poll

Exit polls on Saturday projected that the 'Lotus' will bloom in Kerala as the BJP can win between one to three parliamentary seats in the coastal state.

Times Now ETG survey showed the Trissur Lok Sabha candidate Suresh Gopi will win. The survey also projected one seat for the BJP, four for the ruling Left led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan while the Congress-led UDF may win 14 to 15 seats.

India Today-Axis My India has projected that the BJP will win two to three seats and also said that Minister of State Rajeev Chandrasekhar will upset three-time sitting Congress member Shashi Tharoor.

ABP-C-Voter has also projected one to three seats for the BJP while India TV-CNX has also projected the same.

The biggest shocker has come from the ABP C-Voter which has projected that the Vijayan-led Left will not win a single seat while the India Today-Axis My India has projected zero to one seat for the Left.

However, all the agencies have projected that the Congress-led UDF will win a minimum of 14 seats and can end up winning 19 seats.

During the 2019 Lok Sabha exit polls, none of the agencies projected the election outcome correctly. In fact, three agencies had projected that the BJP would open its account in the state.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and all the top Congress leaders during their campaign have said the BJP will finish in third place in all 20 constituencies of the state.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress-led UDF won 19 seats and secured a vote share of 47.48 per cent, CPI-M-led Left Front won one seat and got 36.29 per cent vote and the BJP managed a mere 15.64 per cent vote share.
